Helping Little Dogs, To Canada With Love Tuesday, July 20, 2010

On Tuesday July 20th, 11 dogs from California animal shelters will board a plane to Calgary, Alberta for a new life in Canada.

DeAnn Turner, Lesley Bloomer, Jennifer Boydstun and Jill Freeland met as volunteers for DAWG (Dog Adoption Welfare Group) in Santa Barbara. They combined resources to transport small dogs from high-density, high-kill shelters in the Los Angeles area to Calgary where there is a shortage of small, adoptable dogs.

Turner formed a relationship with Rory O'Neill, founder of Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue in Canada, where qualified adopters eagerly await the arrival of their petite new pets.

Who We Are

Who Are We?

Saving one animal will not save the world, but surely for that one animal the world will change forever ~ Author Unknown

Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue (R-mar) is dedicated to rescuing and finding homes and adopters for dogs and cats.

We frequently rescue dogs that have been abandoned, found starving, often traumatized and freezing, on the Morley Reserve near Calgary. Many Calgarians who don't want their dogs abandon them on the Reserve. People often think the Natives aren't taking care of their dogs, however that is not the case. Most of the dogs were abandoned by previous owners, often not spayed or neutered, and they have puppies, also starving, lonely and riddled with parasites, and starting the breeding cycle all over again.

Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue also helps other rescue groups that are overcrowded, due to lack of spay and neuter laws and people allowing their pets to breed. The rescue groups we often help are other volunteers who pull dogs shortly before euthanaisa, and often from "shelters" or dog pounds that use inhumane kill practices. Either way, its terribly sad, and people that adopt from Rocky Mountain Animal Rescue are saving lives of wonderful and deserving animals that are so appreciative when they get a loving home.

Adopting a friend

Thank you for considering to adopt one of our rescued pets! We are a highly involved animal rescue society.

The first step to adoption is to inquire about the pet you are interested in. Please email the director, Rory O'Neill, and enter the name of the pet in the subject line. Rory will write back as soon as possible (and feel free to check back, we get hundreds of emails a week). Rory is often doing actual rescue, transport, coordinating, or pet behavioural consulting.
