More About RIP, Jake
Update 9/18/08
A few more checks have arrived at Dr. Shepherd's, and they are gratefully accepted for Jake's final costs. We've decided to continue to accept donations in Jake's name at the hospital, so that other old dogs can be helped. We have one older guy (Shorty) in rescue now, and one on the horizon who has bladder stones, so the need remains. You are wonderful, and you make such a difference! Thanks again.

Update 9/16/08
Jake had been slowing down, but still eating and snarking at Ripley. We had been carrying him up and down the steps and this weekend had to carry him outside to potty, too. Sunday he didn't want to get up, and apparently his kidneys shut down, with not output at all. He let us know it was time, and at 7pm, he made the trip to the Rainbow Bridge with Dr. Stephanie attending. Rest in peace, big guy.
Update 7/23/08
We are humbled and thankful for the kind people who have helped Jake. We truly appreciate it!

After a couple of inquiries to adopt Jake and a recent vet exam, we've decided to let him live out his days in foster care here in WV. Jake has Cushings, hypothyroid, early kidney failure, high blood pressure, and dry eye. He snarks at the other dogs and pees in his crate. But his ears are up, he's in no pain, and he competes for the occasional tossed breakfast cereal and mini carrot with the rest of the pack. Dr. Stephanie Shepherd at Cheat Lake Animal Hospital manages his complex medical needs, and monitors his conditions with blood workups every 3 months or so.
Jake's Cushings is managed by twice-weekly doses of Lysodren, of which 12 doses costs about $38 and is filled by WalMart's pharmacy. He is also on thyroid medicine, an eye ointment for dry eye, and Enacard + Norvasc (blood pressure medicine) once a day. He gets his teeth brushed regularly but is missing most of them. He gets bloodwork done every 3 months, too. We estimate his daily meds costs at $3.50. That's almost $100/month, not including vet visits.
His bloodwork shows some signs of early kidney failure but has been maintained on a regular diet for a year now. He is currently eating Eagle Pack fish-and-oatmeal formula, and previously ate a homemade diet of rice, hamburger, eggs, and vitamins. I had been giving him Pancreved powder when he was on the rice formula but since switching to Eagle he hasn't needed it to maintain firm stool.
He is my shadow in the house, and mills around and begs food with the best of them. I own four other Corgis or mixes, and one guest mini Dachshund. Breakfast time is a hoot! My Border Collie / Corgi mix adolescent male bugs him and Jake's been known to snark at him. Since he's practically toothless, none of the dogs take him seriously. :) I told him that as long as the lights were on in his eyes he had a home. :)
Long story short, if you would like to help Jake he would greatly appreciate a donation made in his name to the Cheat Lake Animal Hospital, which would help cover his medical expenses. We are not a non-profit organization; we depend on our fosters for veterinary care and food, and most importantly, love. Vet expenses are reimbursed by adoption fees, but since Jake isn't going anywhere we decided to make this plea for assistance.
If you can help it would be wonderful. Send any size donation to Cheat Lake Animal Hospital, attn: Dr. Stephanie Shepherd, 286 Fairchance Road, Morgantown, WV, 26508. Mark it for "Jake - WV Corgi Rescue". Feel free to call them for a reference. Their number is 304-594-1124. We'll follow up all donations with a thank you note, and with a "love ya" post here with Jake's info.
Corgi hugs and arroooos.

=====================
Jake has had a rough life, and is now enjoying a life of comparitive luxury. He came to us at over 50 lbs, and after a major weight loss was placed. His new owner's lifestyle changed and she wanted a dog who was more active, so Jake came back to us.
Meantime, he was diagnosed with Cushings and hypothyroidism, both of which are controlled by medication. He is also on blood pressure meds and some Chinese herbs to support his liver and kidney functions.
He is laid back, bright-eyed, and happy and is his foster mom's shadow wherever she goes. He's happy to hang out watching TV, or in the kitchen waiting for treats to drop from the sky. :) He is nine years young, housetrained, microchipped. He has had his shots and a recent dental and bloodwork to check on his health.
If you're interested in adopting this wonderful senior, please download an application. We check references and always do a home visit. We now have a transport available that travels from TN, through VA, and on to the New England states that dogs can hitch a ride on for a reasonable fee. See PETSLLC.NET for details.
RIP, Jake is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
