More About Frieda

09-05-07 Frieda has found her fur-ever home as a trucking dog, 18 wheels a rollin'.
------------------------

08-31-07 We have made a commitment to a shelter to take in this ancient black & tan dachshund..

Found as a stray, taken in by a good samaritan, advertising has failed to locate her owner. The good citizen has bathed her with flea/tick shampoo, trimmed her nails, expressed glands which were very full. This fur-girl appears to have been dearly loved at one time until she wasn't.
The shelter vet has found her to be spayed, old age eyes, may not hear well, 10 lbs., in desperate need of a dental. Doc indicated her poor skin & hair coat are probably due to an old flea allergy, poor quality food.

She appears to be housebroken, goes outside, does her duty, then comes back inside to waddle around the shelter ofc. She likes to sit on a lap, adores cuddling.

We will post a pic. & updates once she arrives, visits our rescue vet for a dental, updating of vaccinations, anything else Doc deems needed.
Her likes & dislikes will be observed so you will know if this fur-kid is suitable for your home.

09-01 Tagged as Frieda by Karl, this fur-girl has arrived. With excellent house manners, vehicle manners, leash manners she has an appt. after the holiday for a dental & Rabies, anything else Doc deems needed.
She does have a severe case of allergies, already responding with Benadryl until she sees Doc.

09-02 Frieda slept quietly all night on a Kuranda bed in the dining room.

There has been discussion on what Frieda is mixed with. It may be chihuahua, may be min pin, just have no clue.

09-04 Frieda has made herself at home on a blanket on a Kuranda bed.

09-05 Frieda had a much needed dental with extractions, Rabies, will need Benadryl, good food, supplements to get her skin & hair coat back in top shape. Doc did not recommend anything stronger than Benadryl due to her age.

She then stopped by Polly's Precious Paws for a medicated shampoo & massage.

Buck will be allowed to take a 2nd small dog on the truck. Thus, he will be taking Frieda to ride with Gus, giving her the best of life for whatever time she has left.
She will probably see more country in a few weeks, months, than most of us see in a lifetime riding on 18 wheels, sitting up high.

Frieda joins a family of dachshund lovers, Dad Buck, Mom Mary, & dachshund fur-siblings Sir Gus ,Tipi Girl, & Snickers.

09-09 A phone call with Mary found Frieda quite the character. She will put her head on Mary's toe to rest, seems to be settling in nicely. She shared the bed last night & it was one very crowded bed.

09-10- Buck called with his update from Frieda's first day on the road. She did real good riding in the truck, shares the bed & food with Gus. Frieda does very well on the leash.
Both fur-kids jumped out of their basket on the passenger seat, dove into the basket of chicken nuggets Buck had for their snack.
She wags her tail, waddles around, is having a good old time. She seems to be grinning, looking around, head in the air. Frieda is quite spry so Buck is quite hopeful she may live some time before becoming an Angel Dog.
In Lenexa KS both Gus & Frieda treed an opossum.

09-12 Frieda woke Buck up at 4:30AM, her nose on his, had to go outside. So, off Buck, Gus & Frieda went.
Frieda is quick to do her duty, then back to the truck.
Bacon & eggs for breakfast, roast beef for lunch, roast beef & dog food for dinner, she's non stop waggin' her tail.
The truckin' life is a good life for these fur-kids. They will see more of the country in a month than most humans see in 5 yrs.

09-16 Frieda has now been in 11 states in the one week with Buck & Sir Gus. Lying in their basket together on the passenger seat Gus uses Frieda for a pillow.
In bed at night, Frieda starts out curled up behind Buck's knees, later she's at his shoulder near his head & by early AM her little head is on his arm.
The greasy truck stop food is helping her skin. She's a little chow hound, eating whatever is in her bowl.
Both fur-kids are doing well together & Buck always gives Sir Gus a bit of extra attention so he knows he is not being replaced.

09-18 Frieda has totally relaxed in the basket with Gus. Buck has found her lying on her back, paws in the air, a smile on her face.
Gus will nudge her several times, get her into just the right position, then sleep with his head across her neck.
Gus is sharing everything without a problem except a bit jealous if Buck pets Frieda. Thus, if Gus is sleeping, Buck can then pet Frieda.

09-23 Buck reports that Frieda has been to Canada, was within 35 mi. of Niagara Falls & they now head to Texas. At the Canadian border, proof of vaccinations & ownership was required which Buck had with him.
Buck now refers to Frieda as "Cleopatra." Her coat now glistens on the truck stop greasy food in addition to her dog food. She prefers to lie on her side, have Buck hand her one morsel of truck stop food at a time. Spoiled!!
She is also very lively now, quite active, seems to be thriving with the TLC of a good man & a good fur-brother. Buck insists she spends her days smiling, curled up with Gus.

10-01 Buck called with his typical laugh.
"Picture this" he said. "Gus was in his basket, lying stretched out on his left side. Frieda was stretched out on her left side, snuggled against his belly. Gus put his right paw across Frieda's right side." Ahhhhh What a cute pair, if only he had taken a camera along. A true Kodak moment!

10-04 An early morning call to tell they are heading to through the Florida Everglades, has been raining all week.
Frieda has learned a new "trick." When Buck is petting Gus, she will put her nose between Gus and Buck's hand, nudge her way for petting. She's a dear!

Nov. calls from Buck that Frieda is simply tail wagging friendly, riding primarily the east coast, happy, coat looking shiny, eating all that greasy truck stop tidbits Buck brings back for her & Gus.
She will see more of the country in a week than most of us humans see in a lifetime.

11-22 Buck called to wish us Happy Thanksgiving. He & the fur-kids should be home to Mary & the fur-kids by 3PM for some short down time.

01-16-08 Buck called to let us know Frieda & Gus are tired of snow & cold weather. They have been to Canada. Frieda was out walking, fell into a depression under the snow, came up wearing just a snow hat, looking around like "What on earth happened to the earth?"
Gus still prefers dashing out, doing his duty, dashing back to the warmth of the truck.
Frieda loves being outside, knowing she will be sleeping under the covers with Buck, curled up as close to him as she can get.

02-02-A lovely surprise as Buck, Mary, Frieda, Sir Gus, Snickers & TipiGirl came to visit. It's so good to see the fur-kids happy & healthy, listen to their parents brag on their exploits.

03-12 Buck called to tell us Frieda has a bit of a limp, doing better than earlier in the day. She may have sprained a muscle playing too hard or she may have showing a bit of arthritis. He will be monitoring her closely, find a vet on the road if needed.

04-15 Buck called early AM, will NEVER give Frieda another piece of cashew chicken. She had such a gassy reaction that he was trying to figure a way to hang an air freshener from her tail. He didn't get much sleep last night!

05-15 Buck called to tell us Frieda is a bit "fluffy" on the truck stop food that she eats in addition to her regular dry pet food.
He has put her on a diet, only one piece of bacon instead of two.
05-16 Buck called. He is feeding 2 meals a day instead of 3 so Frieda is rather annoyed with him.
He is trying to stress the importance of being ready for swimsuit season.

05-19 Frieda has found it amusing to pull all the covers off of Gus, leaving Gus rather puzzled "Who took my covers?"
Loads often going to Canada, they recently ended up with a TX run, 106 temp. Buck had to carry both across the hot parking lot pavement to a grassy area to doe their duty.

07-19 Buck, Mary, Frieda, Sir Gus, Snickers & Elsa were all in the small dog play area with us today.
Frieda continues to waddle along following Buck. She will sniff about when doing her duty, take what seems fur-ever to find the paw-fect spot before she tends to her business. She's great in the truck!

07-26-Buck called, 106 degrees, truck broke down, he & the fur-kids in a motel while truck is in shop.
His trucking company offers free lodging for Buck, dogs must be in an outdoor kennel which was not acceptable to Buck in this heat. He would find both fur-kids dead of heat exhaustion. Thus, he paid his own lodging, took the fur-kids with him, A/C, watching TV.

08-17 Buck called south of Little Rock headed to Canada. Frieda is rather sluggish, a bit of a whimper. We chatted with possible causes. Once outside she wiggles her little tail, walks about. He will watch her diet closely.
Sir Gus prefers to sleep covered up. Frieda pulls the covers off of him, then "nests" to get them just right to lie upon. It's a tug of war in the sleeper with Gus wanting his covers & Frieda wanting them for her pillow.

08-21 Buck called, is heading in, appointment for Frieda to see Doc. She is not eating, drinking, whimpers, seems in discomfort.
Please cross your paws for both Buck & Frieda.

08-22 - Buck called jubilant after seeing Doc with Frieda. Doc believes Frieda had gotten hold of some food that had gone bad. Sometimes the buffet food at a truck stop may be left out a bit too long. Buck will doing a sniff test before taking "tidbits" to the fur-kids.

08-23 Buck brought Frieda to visit. He is so happy she is doing better. Along came Mary, Sir Gus, Snickers & Elsa. It's great to see how happy the fur-kids are.
Frieda sat at the door waiting for Buck to return after he had to leave to switch trailers. She waited patiently for hours at the door until he returned. One bonded little girl to her big trucker Dad.

08-31 Frieda is having tummy troubles again. Mary has finally convinced Buck to keep Frieda on dry dog food. While we both understand Buck wants to let her have a taste treat from the food bars at truck stops, her little digestive system goes into a revolt.
A compromise has been reached. She will get a bit of gravy from the food bar put over her dry dog food. Buck is not bashful when it comes to asking a waitress to fix him up a little bowl of gravy and he will pay for it. His doggies are in the truck, need something good to eat.
Buck had liver & onions, came back to the truck without food, just the scent of food. Frieda nearly tore his shirt off him looking for the liver she just knew he would have since the aroma was overpowering.

09-06 Buck called. Frieda is back off her feed, coughing when she drinks, won't eat. He is going to baby her along, get her to the vet as soon as he gets a trip scheduled home. If she worsens before he can get a trip home he will seek a vet in the area he is passing through.
Paws are crossed!

09-07 Buck is working his way home, has an appointment with his vet on Friday.
It appears Frieda has something wrong with her throat. She LOVES belly rubs yet when Buck rubs near her throat then she whimpers in pain. Even Gus has been paying close attention to Frieda, sleeping with his head across her tummy, licking at her mouth.
Buck has managed to get Frieda to lap up just a bit of gravy. She doesn't lap up much, then quits.
Please keep the paws crossed for Frieda & for Buck. The big guy worries when his little fur-girl is not quite right.

09-09 Buck is a bit happier now that Frieda is waggin her tail, waddlin along, lapping up broth slowly. He will still have Doc check her over on Friday, see what the problem is with her throat. One day at a time!

09-13 Buck took Frieda for a vet check. Doc found her temperature down a bit, she has lost a bit of weight, yet wagging her tail. So, Buck will be babying her along, keeping our paws crossed.

09-14 Buck & Mary came with the fur-kids. Frieda is now on canned food to make it easier to swallow. Frieda adores Buck, sits as his feet looking up, waiting to be picked up, cuddled. She's so spoiled & having such a good time on the truck with Buck & Sir Gus.

10-17-Mary called needing prayers for Buck. A medical emergency while in Cheyenne WY, in the hospital, another trucker has taken both Frieda & Sir Gus to his home where there is a beagle & a whiskered one. Frieda can't see well yet she took out after the cat, running hard & fast. Amazing!

10-23 Mary called, relieved that Buck is now out of the hospital. He has picked up Frieda & Sir Gus, waiting in the truck for a load. He has asked his dispatcher to take it easy on him for a few more days, route him home ASAP.

10-28 Mary has advised us that Buck is home, off the road until he can see his personal physician. He gets to spend more time with the fur-kids about the house.

11-03 Buck is off the road indefinitely. Gus & Frieda are settling in with life at home.

11-29 Buck & Mary with Sir Gus dressed as Santa Paws, Snickers dressed as Mrs. Santa Paws & Frieda dressed as Santa's helper visited the Good Samaritan Care Center. What a fun time with the red, white, gold & Santa Paws' black belt to usher in the Christmas Season.

12-28 Frieda, Sir Gus & Snickers came to visit taking Boyd home with them.
Buck's returning to 18 wheels a rollin', just can't wait to get on the road again, with Frieda & Sir Gus going along.
Snickers asked SantaPaws for a fur-sibling to keep her company as she stays home alone. Her wish was granted today as Boyd left rescue.

01-21-09 Buck's first update after he, Frieda & Sir Gus hit the road again.
It's been 16 below in Minneapolis, then to Laredo TX where they had to turn the A/C on. The fur-kids waste no time when it's cold to dash a short distance from the truck, do their duty, back to the warmth of the cab.

03-01 A phone call from Buck. They sat 3 hours on I-44 in MO as wrecks were cleared from a snowstorm. Neither Frieda nor Sir Gus were happy about the snow.
From the frigid temps they then made their way to TX, temperatures in the 40s.

03-19 Frieda & Gus were in Florida, met an armadillo, made fast tracks away from it.

05-02 Frieda & Gus have a reunion coming up with Rick & Judy, the couple that took care of them when Buck was hospitalized while out on the road last year.
Buck is going to be back in Cheyenne, WY, has arranged to meet them at the truck stop where he took ill, have lunch, let them see the fur-kids again.

05-20 Going through road construction in Indiana at 30 MPH, window open part way, sleeping Frieda awoke, nose twitching, sat up, truck was passing McDonalds. No food from Buck, she dozed back off. Just a few blocks later, still at 30 MPH, she awake again, head up, nose twitching, passing Wendy's. She knows her fast food!

06-28 A phone call from Buck. Frieda & Sir Gus are now house pets. He has taken a different job, home every day, working the night shift. He will get to have the fur-kids about the house all day, Mary will be home with them all night. They have had a good time on the road. Now their time will be spent about the house until the call of the road beckons them once again.

07-17 Mary called. Frieda now has a waistline. She is also eating dog food instead of truck stop food, looking much slimmer & trimmer.

09-06 PeterPan & Taylor came to visit, get more eye Rx. They arrived with Mary & fur-kids Sir Gus, Boyd, Snickers, Frieda. All have made tremendous progress!
PeterPan loves being held, sat most of the time in Taylor's lap. Sir Gus is still quite active, had to explore, "mark" to let the other fur-kids know he was back. Boyd, Snickers & Frieda curled up, dozed off on a pillow on a Kuranda bed. These are all seniors that still enjoy life & living.
Frieda has slimmed down to 8 lbs., gets around much easier now.

10-31 A phone call from Buck
He is staying 5 days away from home, then 2 days home. He has a camper for Gus & Frieda, an electric heated bed, prefer sleeping on that bed than in bed with Buck.
Frieda fell out of the camper door, got up, looked about, walked on as if nothing happened.

There are moles in the campground. Gus jumped about a foot as the mole moved the earth, got so scared he ran back to the camper, terrified of a little mole.
They have dog food for breakfast, chicken mcnuggets for a treat at bedtime.
