More About STAR-R.I.P.
Star is a beautiful short hair female who is approximately 16-18 months old now. She was born on the streets of Philadelphia and rescued on a cold snowy night by a nice lady who was unable to care for her. She is still very shy and timid but once she gets to know you, she will warm your heart with her sweet and affectionate personality. She loves to play under the covers and loves to play with a furry mouse on the end of the string, as long as you are at the other end of the string making it come alive! Star has been in a foster home for a year, still waiting for a place to call home. Unfortunately, she has tested positive for Feline Leukemia. The FeLV virus is only transferred from cat to cat and not to humans, dogs or other animals. She has been spayed and is up to date with shots. Star appears to be healthy and shows no signs of illness. We are looking for a home with no other cats or a home that may cater to cats with Feline Leukemia. Please open your hearts and offer a home for Star so that she can feel what it is like to be a part of a loving household instead of spending the rest of her life in foster care confined to a small room.
THE TRUTH ABOUT FeLV
*Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a virus that may eventually suppress the immune system of the carrier animal. The most common secondary disease that affects the cat is cancer.
*The FeLV virus is present in the saliva, blood, urine, and feces of an infected cat. For the virus to spread to another cat, prolonged contact is most likely necessary. Mutual grooming is the most common means of transmission.
*FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) & FeLV are unrelated.
*Between 60-70% of the adult cat community has a natural immunity to the virus.
*There is a vaccine for FeLV, but it is only reported as being 60-90% effective.
*The life expectancy of an adult cat with FeLV varies tremendously, given that there are several strains of the virus, some being more debilitating to the cat than others. With a less aggressive infection, the cat could live many happy years.
*A cat can test "False-Positive" for FeLV. Because of this, many cats who were never infected in the first place, or would never have become ill, have unfortunately been killed.
