Mattie is a purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgi. She is 10 years young, is in overall good health, and she still has a lot of spring in her step for a senior gal. She is spayed and up to date on routine vet care including vaccinations, and being kept on heart worm preventative.
Mattie's owner is going through a difficult time in her life and looking for a better situation for Mattie than she can provide to her.
Dear Mattie is considered special needs with her senior status and her being diabetic and having lost her eyesight as a result of her diabetes. Mattie requires humilin insulin injections twice a day -for the rest of her life- to manage her diabetic condition. This is part of her every day routine and she has grown accustomed to the procedure. Her owner gives Mattie the injections after her morning and evening meals. Mattie must get her insulin twice a day without fail to thrive. It is not a difficult to learn to give injections and Mattie's new family will be instructed on how to do so.
**Note ** Mattie gets .08 cc's of humulin twice a day. We are told that a bottle of humulin costs about $34 and lasts Mattie about 2 months breaking down her medication costs to about $17 per month. The syringes used can be re-used and are inexpensive - a large quantity runs about $7 and we were informed that they would last a very long time.
Mattie currently lives with 2 other rambunctious dogs and as she lost her eyesight she became increasingly unsettled by all their activity and playfulness. Mattie would do well in a home as the only pup or with a mature & settled canine companion who wouldn't distress her with their considerable bounce. Mattie has lived with 2 cats and she does very well with those of the feline persuasion.
We would like for Mattie to have a fenced yard or a family committed to taking her for daily walks to keep her fit and trim. Mattie l-o-v-e-s going for walks! She is not up for power walks but would enjoy getting out and about with her family. She would do well having a consistant walking route that would become familiar and one that she could look forward to enjoying every day. Mattie has nice house manners, knows sit and lie down and is house trained and crate trained although when she goes in her crate it is never closed. She is currently using a doggy door to go in and out into the yard as she desires.
Mattie was raised with children but with her special needs we feel that she would do best in an adult home or a one with teenagers who are considerate of animals. She would enjoy being part of a quiet family with a regular routine she could count on. Once Mattie settled into her new digs and learned to navigate her home she would get around quite nicely. Mattie handles steps just fine, but a home with just a few steps to manuever would be ideal for coming and going outdoors as she grows old gracefully.
Mattie doesn't know she is special needs. She enjoys her every day - just like everyone else! She is most content when she can just be herself in the company of those who can appreciate her sweet spirit and gentle companionship. Corgis can live into their teens and although she is now ten, her dear little spirit is ageless. Mattie offers unconditional love in exchange for the same.
