More About Sir Gus
He will be trucking on 18 wheels & 4 paws with Buck.
We have shortened up his original profile to add notes about his trucking adventures.
Please scroll down for news of his road trips.
-----------------------
01-17-06 Sir Gus just arrived in our rescue. He will be evaluated, updates posted as they become available. He is neutered & UTD on vaccinations including Rabies. He is microchipped with AVID.
Sir Gus is said to be 7 yrs. old, possibly older.
We do know he is extremely friendly, rides well in a vehicle, gets along with the other dogs. He walks very well on a leash.
He was cat tested soon after arrival. He totally ignored the feline!
Alas, we are not yet sure of his house manners.
01-18-06 Sir Gus visited Doc who agrees that he may be older than 7 yrs. He is scheduled for a dental & Doc may be able to tell us more after that has been done.
Gus weighed in at 14.7 lbs.
He went to Doc's wearing a bright red & white checked sweater. Such a handsome dog! Clothes do make the dog!
01-19-06 Gus visited Doc this AM for a dental. His teeth are now sparkling white! Doc suggested a fish oil supplement for his dry skin. Of course, good quality food & a good quality shampoo helps.
01-28-06 Gus has been placed in foster care with Mary & Tipi Girl. He rode with Mary's niece Taylor, a bit camera shy. He looks so handsome in his bright purple harness.
02-10-06 We were able to meet Buck today at Doc Johnson's as he took Tipi Girl & Sir Alex for dentals. Doc did check over Gus very thoroughly, yet said he does NOT recommend a dental again this soon. His back teeth will eventually need removed, yet are firmly attached.
Sir Gus weighed in at 12 1/2 lbs.
03-17-06 Sir Gus will "mark" if given half a chance with all of the doggy smells here.
05-14-06 Sir Gus continues to wait patiently for his fur-ever home. He is so happy, no trouble about the house or play area. He gets along with everyone & everything, including the cat.
07-24-06 Sir Gus visited Doc today for an update on his vaccinations. Doc said he may need a dental in the near future, yet hardly any teeth to polish.
08-31-06 Sir Gus has been adopted by Buck. Mary called lat that same day to tell us that Buck is already spoiling him rotten. He lies beside Buck on the couch, covered up by a sheet, with Buck rubbing his belly.
09-03-06 Buck called as he & Gus are already on the road. Gus is having a time with the CB. A man's voice is OK. He hears a woman's voice, he hunts in the sleeper unit trying to find her.
They had a long night, no sleep, as a reefer unit parked next to them, very loud, Gus could not sleep, thus Buck could not sleep. Gus has excellent hearing so he will take some time to adjust to sleeping with the noise of trucks in a truck stop.
Buck is also having to take Gus for long walks to get him to do his duty. Gus loves to walk, is excellent with his leash skills.
09-08- Buck called to tell us that Sir Gus had a vet visit in Kentucky. Gus stepped on something in the dark, was limping, so Buck found a vet, had him seen. He weighs 14 1/2 lbs., is now on antibiotics for the injured paw. Not easy to park that 18 wheeler at the vet's, yet Buck did it for the love of his injured trucking buddy. The vet's opinion is that Gus is older than even 8 or 9. Buck doesn't care, he loves him anyway.
09-16 Buck called to tell us that Gus has now been in 13 states, plus had his first truck wash. Didn't like it! Buck also found that Gus had been hiding his dry dog food under his blanket! He is trying to train Buck to give him truck stop food!
09-24 Buck called to tell us he had to give Gus a bath beside the truck, not just one day yet two days in a row. They were walking the first day, very quickly Gus rolled in an inappropriate matter. Buck had to use Johnson's baby shampoo that he had on the truck, wash him completely. The second day they were walking & again Gus quickly rolled in inappropriate matter, creating the need for another bath.
Buck also noticed that Gus does not like wet grass, seems a bit cautious with his paws. He may have a bit of arthritis. He will be watching him closely.
10-10 Buck called to tell us that Gus spotted himself in a shiny chrome bumper of another semi parked beside them, wagged his tail at his reflection. Gus still limps a bit on occasion, no obvious sign of an injury. Buck will be trying aspirin for possible arthritis until he can see the vet.
10-28 Sir Gus came back to Cole Camp for the Halloween Pets on Parade at the Good Samaritan Care Center. It is always so neat to see the fur-kids return with their family.
11-14 Buck has called with news that Sir Gus may be slowing down. He still wants to walk, yet just having some old age associated problems. He looks out one window, then the other, curls up under the blanket on the seat, just his head sticking out. Buck needs new uniforms as he has lost so much weight walking Sir Gus.
11-19 Buck's phone call
Sir Gus thought he was in Doggy Heaven as Buck gave him a pork bone to chew on.
Gus loves the warm climates they travel in, runs about like a puppy. When they hit the cold areas, then his arthritis acts up, showing he really is an old fur-man.
12-01 Buck & Gus are shut down in Chicago due to storm. Gus is having some trouble in the cold, no energy, good appetite.
12-03 Buck now has Gus on a leash, walking his way to feeling good again. Buck thinks Gus may have had just a bit of cabin fever in the truck. Temp. is about 30, sun is out, Gus wants to walk. Buck is in fast pursuit, a man & his dog.
12-12 A call from OK, gorgeous weather, Gus is keeping Buck busy walking the truck stop parking lot.
12-21 Buck called as he & Gus are headed home for the holidays.Gus has been in 28 states, 40,329 miles, saw the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, also saw Canadian & Mexican borders.
01-04-07 Buck & Gus are weathering the snow storm in a truck stop in Wyoming, white out conditions. Chain law & weight restrictions in effect for truckers.
02-02 Buck & Gus are in snow in Pennsylvania, heading for Arkansas. Gus now walks about in a heavy winter coat, little snow boots if the snow is not too deep. If the snow is too deep, Buck just clears a spot under the truck, Gus is quick, then back to the warmth of the truck.
Gus now expects belly rubs, all four paws in the air, just before turning in for the night. Spoiled rotten!!
03-08 Sir Gus is walking Buck into the ground every chance they get to take a walk. He has already been in 18 states, 20,000 mi since first of year.
03-19 Louisiana is hot, humid. Sir Gus has been walking Buck all over the parking lot.
03-24 Gus had a couple of rough days. Buck had a co-driver due to a rig breakdown, so Gus had to give up his front seat, ride in the bunk for 2 days.
04-03 Buck called from Texas. Gus is turning up his nose at dog food, wants truck stop food. He loves turkey, ham, roast beef. Some of the folks at the shippers/receivers will give Gus part of their lunch.
06-13 Gus saw his first armadillo in Hutchinson TX, a suburb of Dallas. He wasn't sure what it was, wanted to play yet Buck restrained him as not sure what an armadillo might carry in the way of germs or parasites.
09-02 Gus came back to visit the fur-kids for a few days. Buck is changing trucking jobs, Mary is going with him for orientation. Gus wore himself out playing with the small dogs, then curled up for a nap on the Kuranda bed.
Buck brought a HUGE list of how Gus is to spend his day. Gus is ignoring his routine, having fun at the ranch on HIS terms.
11-22 Buck called to wish us Happy Thanksgiving. He & the fur-kids should be home to Mary & the fur-kids by 3PM for some short down time.
01-16-08 Buck called to let us know Frieda & Gus are tired of snow & cold weather. They have been to Canada. Frieda was out walking, fell into a depression under the snow, came up wearing just a snow hat, looking around like "What on earth happened to the earth?"
Gus still prefers dashing out, doing his duty, dashing back to the warmth of the truck.
Frieda loves being outside, knowing she will be sleeping under the covers with Buck, curled up as close to him as she can get.
02-02-A lovely surprise as Buck, Mary, Frieda, Sir Gus, Snickers & TipiGirl came to visit. It's so good to see the fur-kids happy & healthy, listen to their parents brag on them.
04-26 With spring in the air Gus has his "Frisky" side, memories from his breeding days.
Very quickly Frieda put him in his place "Quit that foolishness!"
05-19 Frieda has found it amusing to pull all the covers off of Gus, leaving Gus rather puzzled "Who took my covers?"
Loads often going to Canada, they recently ended up with a TX run, 106 temp. Buck had to carry both across the hot parking lot pavement to a grassy area to doe their duty.
07-19 Buck, Mary, Frieda, Sir Gus, Snickers & Elsa were all in the small dog play area with us today.
Gus prefers to sleep under a cover no matter how hot it is. He dahes out to do his duty, then back to the truck.
07-26-Buck called, 106 degrees, truck broke down, he & the fur-kids in a motel while truck is in shop.
His trucking company offers free lodging for Buck, dogs must be in an outdoor kennel which was not acceptable to Buck in this heat. He would find both fur-kids dead of heat exhaustion. Thus, he paid his own lodging, took the fur-kids with him, A/C, watching TV.
08-17 Buck called south of Little Rock headed to Canada.
Sir Gus prefers to sleep covered up. Frieda pulls the covers off of him, then "nests" to get them just right to lie upon. It's a tug of war in the sleepter with Gus wanting his covers & Frieda wanting them for her pillow.
08-23 Buck brought Frieda to visit. He is so happy she is doing better. Along came Mary, Sir Gus, Snickers & Elsa. It's great to see how happy the fur-kids are.
Gus is very active for an old fur-kid! Hard telling how long he may live on that truck stop food & lots of walks, LOVE.
10-17-Mary called needing prayers for Buck. A medical emergency while in Cheyenne WY, Buck is now in the hospital. Another trucker has taken both Frieda & Sir Gus to his home where there is a beagle & a whiskered one.
10-23 Mary called, relieved that Buck is now out of the hospital. He has picked up Frieda & Sir Gus, waiting in the truck for a load. He has asked his dispatcher to take it easy on him for a few more days, route him home ASAP.
10-28 Mary has advised us that Buck is home, off the road until he can see his personal physician. He gets to spend more time with the fur-kids about the house.
11-03 Buck is off the road indefinitely. Gus & Frieda are settling in with life at home.
11-29 Buck & Mary with Sir Gus dressed as Santa Paws, Snickers dressed as Mrs. Santa Paws & Frieda dressed as Santa's helper visited the Good Samaritan Care Center. What a fun time with the red, white, gold & Santa Paws' black belt to usher in the Christmas Season.
Sir Gus has enjoyed life at home, now seems ready to be "On the road again, just can't wait to get on the road again."
12-28 Sir Gus, Frieda & Snickers came to visit taking Boyd home with them.
Buck's returning to 18 wheels a rollin', just can't wait to get on the road again, with Frieda & Sir Gus going along.
Snickers asked SantaPaws for a fur-sibling to keep her company as she stays home alone. Her wish was granted today as Boyd left rescue.
01-21-09 Buck's first update after he, Frieda & Sir Gus hit the road again.
It's been 16 below in Minneapolis, then to Laredo TX where they had to turn the A/C on. The fur-kids waste no time when it's cold to dash a short distance from the truck, do their duty, back to the warmth of the cab.
03-01 A phone call from Buck. They sat 3 hours on I-44 in MO as wrecks were cleared from a snowstorm. Neither Frieda nor Sir Gus were happy about the snow.
From the frigid temps they then made their way to TX, temperatures in the 40s.
Gus puts himself under the bunk, rump next to the special heater vent. When Buck can't find him he looks under the bunk, toasty warm so Gus won't have to snuggle under the covers.
03-19 Frieda & Gus were in Florida, met an armadillo, made fast tracks away from it.
Buck told Gus to go get exercise. He went from Buck's right side to his left side, then curled up, dozed off on his lap, belly up, not a care in the world!
05-02 Gus & Frieda have a reunion coming up with Rick & Judy, the couple that took care of them when Buck was hospitalized while out on the road last year.
Buck is going to be back in Cheyenne, WY, has arranged to meet them at the truck stop where he took ill, have lunch, let them see the fur-kids again.
Gus has slowed down considerably over the past few weeks. He won't eat his dog food yet he still enjoys bacon & eggs for breakfast. At his age & after the life he has had, Buck lets him enjoy whatever he will eat.
05-20 Gus has decided to sleep on top of the sleeping bag, burrowing into a little indentation rather than sleeping under the covers.
06-28 A phone call from Buck. Frieda & Sir Gus are now house pets. He has taken a different job, home every day, working the night shift. He will get to have the fur-kids about the house all day, Mary will be home with them all night. They have had a good time on the road. Now their time will be spent about the house until the call of the road beckons them once again.
09-06 PeterPan & Taylor came to visit, get more eye Rx. They arrived with Mary & fur-kids Sir Gus, Boyd, Snickers, Frieda. All have made tremendous progress!
PeterPan loves being held, sat most of the time in Taylor's lap. Sir Gus is still quite active, had to explore, "mark" to let the other fur-kids know he was back. Boyd, Snickers & Frieda curled up, dozed off on a pillow on a Kuranda bed. These are all seniors that still enjoy life & living.
10-31 A phone call from Buck
He is staying 5 days away from home, then 2 days home. He has a camper for Gus & Frieda, an electric heated bed, prefer sleeping on that bed than in bed with Buck.
Frieda fell out of the camper door, got up, looked about, walked on as if nothing happened.
There are moles in the campground. Gus jumped about a foot as the mole moved the earth, got so scared he ran back to the camper, terrified of a little mole.
They have dog food for breakfast, chicken mcnuggets for a treat at bedtime.
Sir Gus is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.
