More About SOPHIE
"Sophie" is such a precious little girl! She has the sweetest dispostion I've ever seen in a cat. She loves to have her head & neck scratched and will place her head in the palm of your hand until you do so. When she is happy, which is almost all of the time, you'll find her in a comfy position kneading her blanket and purring.
Unfortunatley, for "Sophie" she tested positive for The Feline LeukemiaVirus, which makes her chances of finding a new loving home almost next to impossible. You see, The Feline Leukemia Virus is a highly contagious disease which can be transmitted to other felines but NOT to humans (To learn more about feline leukemia, contact us today).
Thankfully, a wonderful couple brought "Sophie" inside to safety and surrendered her to S.W.R.O. in hopes of finding her a home. "Sophie's" was living in the couples neighborhood where they were feeding her. In fact, many of the times the couple let "Sophie" come inside their home with their kitties to eat dinner. But the couple couldn't keep her because their landlord has a limit on the amount of cats they can have.
The couple explained that "Sophie" has had many litters in their neighborhood and many of the times, she would be carrying a dead kitten around in her mouth as if the kitten were alive. Most likely, the kittens had been infected with the leukemia virus also and that is why they didn't survive. It broke the couple's heart to see this, especially since "Sophie" seemed so excited to show her care givers the nice little present she had reproduced.
If you or if you know of someone that is willing to give this poor baby a chance at a nice life indoors, please contact us today! Our heart is breaking for her, as she is currently in a cage in the founders garage, which is not a suitable enviroment for any living, breathing creature. Please help us today, help "Sophie".
The Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is one of the most common and destructive of all cat viruses. It is contagious and is spread primarily by saliva during cat fights, grooming or mating. The virus is also spread by blood, urine and feces. Kittens may become infected while still in the womb, when the mother bites off the umbilical cord, or during nursing.
Not all cats exposed to FeLV become infected. About 40% of exposed cats have immune systems that destroy the invading virus (usually adults). The remainder of exposed cats become persistently infected (30%) or develop a latent infection (30%). The latter group has inactive virus in their bone marrow, and these virus particles may later become active when the cat becomes ill from another disease, stress or certain drugs.
The mortality rate of kittens is unfortunately very high but if they survive to adulthood, their chances of survival are better and many can live symptom-free and healthy for a good number of years with a stress-free environment, good food and lots of love. THE TRUTH ABOUT FeLV
*Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a virus that may eventually suppress the immune system of the carrier animal. The most common secondary disease that affects the cat is cancer.
*The FeLV virus is present in the saliva, blood, urine, and feces of an infected cat. For the virus to spread to another cat, prolonged contact is most likely necessary. Mutual grooming is the most common means of transmission.
*FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) & FeLV are unrelated.
*Between 60-70% of the adult cat community has a natural immunity to the virus.
*There is a vaccine for FeLV, but it is only reported as being 60-90% effective.
*The life expectancy of an adult cat with FeLV varies tremendously, given that there are several strains of the virus, some being more debilitating to the cat than others. With a less aggressive infection, the cat could live many happy years.
*A cat can test "False-Positive" for FeLV. Because of this, many cats who were never infected in the first place, or would never have become ill, have unfortunately been killed.
