More About Scorpie

UPDATE 4-4-04: Scorpie spent time with the vet last week only to find that his prognosis was very poor. Upon recommendation of our regular vet, we chose the only humane solution for Scorpie and had him humanely sent to the Rainbow Bridge to reunite with his original owner. Our hearts are aching for our loss of this wonderful companion, but he is now, finally, in no more pain. We will remove him from this listing shortly and add him to our Rainbow Bridge section, but we wanted to leave his update here for a few days as a courtesy for all those who have inquired and sent up prayers for this boy. THANK YOU!! We also want this to serve as a warning to pet owners out there who may have a vet that wants to put your dog on a drug called DiTrim. The vet we were seeing in Big Rapids put him on this drug in an effort to help his urinary infection. However, what they failed to inform us of (and we wish they had) is that this particular drug also causes problems with the eyes and makes the dog miserable!! Our regular vet here said they only use the drug on ONE of their dogs and it is used very infrequently for that one - due to it's bad side effects. Scorpie's eyes hurt him so badly that he would take his paws & try to scratch them and instead was scratching his head above them until it was bleeding. We took him to our vet and found out it was caused by the drug the other vet had put him on. We also had him X-rayed and he did have bladder stones again too. GOODBYE SCORPIE - WE LOVED YOU AND MISS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Original post: We need help for a foster or adoptive home for this boy. PLEASE EMAIL ASAP!! He has no where to go otherwise & no chance. He is OK with other dogs & cats - but doesn't interact a lot - he generally tries to steer clear of the real active ones. He prefers to sleep under a bed, or in a corner where no one will bother him at first, until he gets comfortable with his people and other furkids. He has cataracts on both eyes, typical of dogs his age, but sees and gets around fine. He is very spry & LOVES to go for walks with you (does well on a leash). He is on a special food - Science Diet C/D mix of canned/dry which can both come with him, due to previous problems with bladder stones. He is currently on a daily medication (DiTrim) for a urinary infection he came in with. (He likes to take it in cheese or hot dog or braunschweiger!!). He was being crated excessively at his previous home & is VERY crate trained - he WILL hold it - even if you leave him there 13-16 hrs - which they were doing and is most likely WHY he has such a severe urinary tract infection!! He is in need of a dental cleaning & has a growth (most likely a cyst from lack of care) inside the base of the curl of his tail which we will take care of, as soon as his urinary infection is cleared up & he is cleared for surgery by the vet. He's around 9 yrs old & just wants a place to retire & some gentle loving. He has been hit in the face with a groomer's comb & will try to bite a comb if he sees it coming, but we are working with him on grooming & he is learning it doesn't have to be painful, so we think with some TLC he will overcome this, but in the meantime, he MIGHT have to be muzzled for a few grooming sessions when you get close to his face, or his tail (may be due to the cyst). He will let you comb out his sides, back, etc. without a problem. He's too great of a dog to have to lose just because the home where he's staying wants him out with no notice. PLEASE HELP HIM!!!! . His name is Scorpio (we call him Scorpie as his name doesn't fit him). He originally came from an elderly lady who kicked at him when he was in the way so he is a little foot shy. Then went into a foster home, where they got too busy to take care of him, and he ended up being crated most of his life. When we went to visit him, we were apalled at his condition, and we pulled him from the home, took him home, bathed & combed him, and took him to the vet. Scorpie is very shy at first & will growl when he's afraid, but we have learned that his growl is more of his way of "talking" to us. He will "talk" when excited, and will dance for treats. He is actually becoming quite playful & letting us handle him easily now that he's getting comfortable. We don't think he was getting much one on one attention or handling in his previous home(s). He is housebroken & neutered. He weighs about 18 lbs.
Home without children (< 5 yrs old)
Pet has special needs

Scorpie is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
