More About Jackson - SAD

UPDATE 3-7-04: Jackson went to the Rainbow Bridge today. :-( Where he now knows no pain, his world isn't scaring him, and he can't hurt any others. We will post a story on Jackson for educational purposes, on our new website that is in progress. Jackson had a condition called CENTRAL VESTIBULAR NYSTAGMUS - a condition where his eyes moved constantly & his world had to be a scary place. There is no cure for it, and not really many treatment options either. It caused him to behave oddly, to "attack" things that posed no threat to him. In 7 months, we were not able to find him a home with no other pets or small children that could care for him, or wanted him, and that would have been his only hope of having a decent life. We left his plea up for quite a while, and took care of him in between, but no homes became available, and it left no options for Jackson, other than euthanasia. UPDATE 2-26-04: WE NEED AN IMMEDIATE COMMITMENT TODAY FOR A FOSTER HOME FOR JACKSON OR HE WILL NOT HAVE A CHANCE AT LIFE. HE DESERVES A CHANCE HE'S ONLY A YOUNG DOG. PLEEEEEEEZZZZ! SOMEONE OUT THERE MUST HAVE A HOME WITH NO PETS THAT CAN TAKE HIM IN. HE IS A LOT OF FUN AND LOVES TO PLAY, HE JUST CAN'T BE AROUND OTHER PETS OR SMALL CHILDREN. PLEASE HELP HIM!! HE DOES MARK SOME BUT IF HE IS WATCHED & TOLD "OUTSIDE" HE WILL HAPPILY GO OUTDOORS. HE IS CRATE TRAINED & HIS CRATE CAN STAY WITH HIM. UPDATE 1-24-04: The vet feels Jackson is primarily a sheltie/chihuhua mix, and the breed expert never replied, so we've relisted him as that. We have also determined that he is most likely 10-11 months old and the problem with his eyes is that they move constantly - especially when he's nervous. The vet says he's seen this in Siamese cats but never in a dog and has referred us to a Canine opthamology specialist. When at the vet's he was so nervous that his eyes were going in a circle rather rapidly - so fast that the vet couldn't even get a good look into the back of the eyes!! He must have been very dizzy!! We have also determined that he is NOT neutered yet - his testicles never dropped down so he will need surgery for that after the evaluation on his eyes is complete and that will probably calm him a bit too. His vet bills will be rather high, but if you met him you would understand that he is special enough to deserve a chance. He is a great dog with a great personality & just needs a place where he can be comfortable. He would be a great dog for a shut-in type situation with a fenced yard (so he doesn't have to be walked where he would encounter other dogs) and would give a person hours of entertainment with his antics with his toys!! Are you or someone you know in need of a loving companion???????? If not, can you help sponsor him and donate to his vet fund so we can get his adoption fee down to a level where the right person can adopt him when he finds them? He is crate trained and almost housebroken (still wears a bellyband on occasion) and in need of a loving human companion and a lot of toys!! Original posting: Jackson is a mixed breed of ?????? We have asked the breed expert for their opinion. So far the suggestions we have are: tibetan spaniel/ sheltie/ cocker spaniel (wavy coat)/ chihuahua (face??)/pom. We don't have a clue. Jackson weighs 22 lbs and appears to be around a year old. He is a special needs dog, as he has some sort of a sight impairment, and when things "surprise him" - he attacks them - this includes other dogs, cats, toys, picnic tables, trees, etc. He is not totally blind, but definitely has limited vision - especially in daylight. He has not seen the doggie eye specialist yet for evaluation. He also has retained all of his baby teeth which will need to be pulled. He is neutered & was found as a stray & picked up by a kill shelter. Jackson is great with humans, but is not able to play with other dogs because they startle him & he then goes into "attack mode" where he tries to pull out all of their hair. He seems to think they are like his stuffed toys. We have had him successfully play with one dog, a large aussie mix who was very laid back but could get away if necessary. We put a bell on the aussie so Jackson could tell where he was, and they became great playmates, and if the aussie stood still, Jackson would bark & then the aussie would bark in response and they would go off playing again. So we think that Jackson can be taught to play, even if his eyesight can't be helped, but it will take a lot of patience & a lot of work. He LOVES to run & LOVES TOYS!!!!! He is used to a crate and hides his toys there. We would like him to have a doggie playmate because of his love of playing, but it would have to be a larger dog & one that is very laid back & an owner/foster parent that will work with them, otherwise he will need to be an only dog. We do not recommend him with small children, as he might mistakenly attack them if they surprised him.
