More About Dickens

Dickens - Rooster (male) - 9 months of age - large - brown, red and black with tan speckles

Dickens is a large and handsome young rooster. He is practicing his crowing, which promises to become very impressive. Dickens currently gets along famously with his brother Henry (white rooster) and the other resident rooster in his foster home. He also gets along famously, naturally, with all the hens in his barnyard.

Dickens was the result of a poorly planned classroom school experiment, in which a class of suburban elementary students hatched a small clutch of peeps. With hatching as the objective, little thought had gone into what to do with the babies once they were out of their eggs. (We do not, of course, blame the children for their lack of foresight. We hope that the teacher will reconsider this project next year. )

A Hedgesville Hounds volunteer who lives on a farm was contacted, and she agreed to take the orphan peeps. The peeps flourished in the busy care of the resident old broody hens and a rather senior rooster, who welcomed the newcomers as their own. As the peeps matured, it became evident that two of them were roosters.

Soon, competition between the three roosters, who are now cohabiting peacefully, is likely to commence. Basically, only one rooster can rule the roost. We would love to help Dickens find a roost and a family of hens of his very own.

He has received excellent instruction from his poultry peers in the ways of being a rooster, is in excellent health, and has glorious plumage. If you are searching for a very lovely rooster, please consider Dickens.

The adoption fee for roosters has not been established, as we are a dog rescue. However, applicants should anticipate that our organization is extremely negotiable on this subject, and our only goal is to find a committed, responsible home for Dickens in which he can live as a rooster should, and not end up as Sunday supper.
