IN 8-31-09. Adrian was a dog we rescued off of Craigslist, where she was being advertised as a 4 yr old pregnant purebred female Redbone. Well, the female Redbone part was correct, and that's where it stopped. Poor Adrian was being given away by a caring sister to a man who had been incarcerated and would no longer be able to care for his hounds. Not only was Adrian NOT pregnant, but she was in some serious pain, as she had an orange sized cyst encasing her left ovary, telling her 9 YEAR OLD body that she was pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She had made milk, and alot of it, but had no belly. Upon veterinarian examination and a X-ray, we were able to confirm she had no puppies in her belly. We proceeded with the spay surgery, which at 10 yrs is risky anyway, but she has a grade 3 heart murmur, due to her advanced age and "hard" life, so we prayed she would come through the other end. Not only did she, but with flying colors, and is already fully recovered. This is one TOUGH ole girl who deserves the BEST retirement home any Coonhound could hope for. She is a little spooky with new people, VERY head shy, obviously beaten regularly, but not an ounce of mean in her. She CANNOT be around housecats, as she was formerly an Outfitter hunting hound, so has been trained to track and hunt. She has adjusted to laid back house life wonderfully, and is now fully housebroken, crate trained and well on her way to figuring out she's not going to be hit every time someone moves quickly around her. NICE dog, so deserving..... Redbones, as a breed, where derived from crossing red foxhounds and red Irish foxhounds from Scotland and Ireland. The breed has been around since the eighteeth century. It specializes in Raccoons, but was bred mostly to get the intense, solid deep russet coloring. It specializes in treeing, although it is also very good at tracking. ********************************************************************************************************************Coonhounds are SUPER cute when they are puppies. Hard to resist, but please do your homework! Coonhounds aren't for everyone and do best with people who understand them. While they can be mellow, laid back and easygoing, the are extremely tenacious hunters and can rarely be content as indoor, pampered lap dogs. Their gentle, friendly temperament suits them just fine to family life, but they do need an outlet for their need to "track, trail and bay". This can be a daily run with a jogger, or a nightly trial walk in the woods. It can also be quenched with a busy child or two and some fuzzy, squeeky dog toys in a large, secure backyard..... They must be taught at a young age to come when called. This is important for you to be able to call them back off the trail of any game they might jump on your daily walks, especially when you are lucky enough to be able to walk them in a safe area, off lead. It is illegal in most states to allow your Coonhound to run loose, or run wildlife and it is your responsibility to make sure that doesn't happen. Coonhounds also have very deep, loud voices and will use them if left alone outside all the time. Being allowed to be part of family life is very important to keeping your new Coonhound happy and healthy. They are above all else, pack dogs, and being a member of your "pack" is just want they thrive on!
Adrian is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
