More about Changmi (currently in Taiwan):
In the early morning of September 27, Dr. Lin received an urgent phone call. The lady “Mrs. Wang” who always looks after stray dogs in her neighborhood asked Dr. Lin to go for a rescue mission in a huge water channel. If you have a look at the adoptable dog ads in the Ocean Dog Rescue website you will notice 2 dogs; Mimi and Fifi; who are also been rescued from the same spot early this year when they were 3 months old.

This time, 2 more stray dogs (one puppy and one Rottweiler mixed adult dog) had been thrown down to the water channel and needed to be rescued straight away because the strongest typhoon “Changmi” was hitting Taiwan on the day. According to Mrs. Wang, these 2 dogs had been thrown down to the water channel about 1 week before and because there were no immediate danger so she would throw food down there for them to eat everyday. But in the early morning on the day of rescue, Mrs. Wang heard dogs crying. She went outside and had a look, the heavy rain overnight had raised the water level to more than a meter high. She knew the dogs will be in danger if she doesn’t call for help.

Dr. Lin rushed to the spot and couldn’t see either of the dogs. We then went upstream of the channel and we saw a Rottweiler mixed dog came out from underneath the bridge. We named her “Changmi” after the strongest Typhoon’s name which hit Taiwan on the day she was rescued. Mrs. Wang said this dog is afraid of people. She usually feeds Changmi from far away. After Mrs. Wang put the food down and left; Changmi would came and start eating. So that left us only one choice to capture Changmi and bring her up from the water channel --- “using blow gun”.

The wind was getting stronger and the weather report said this typhoon “Changmi” will reach grade 17 on the day. It became very hard for Dr. Lin’s blow gun to target Changmi. And Changmi saw so many of us following her above the channel and got quite scared. We noticed Changmi’s front leg was crippled and her left rear leg didn’t seem functioning properly either. As soon as Dr. Lin saw Changmi stopped running he shot out the tranquilizing needle and Changmi started running again. After a few minutes Changmi seemed to feel bit sleepy and she had slowed down a bit but because of the edge on the side of the channel is very narrow; Changmi couldn’t balance her body and had fallen into the water. Dr. Lin rushed down the channel to pick her up. Changmi had another tranquilizer so Dr. Lin would be able to bring her up from the channel.

We were all so relieved after 2 hours chasing and following. Changmi is finally saved. She seemed to know that we are all trying to help her, she started licking my hand when I tried to pat her head from outside the cage after she had waken up.

Changmi was brought back to the animal hospital for proper check up and we arranged spay operation for her. Mrs. Wang has difficulty to pay for Changmi’s medical bills so she requested Dr. Lin to drop off Changmi to her neighborhood after spay operation because she has no ability to pay for boarding at the hospital. But Mrs. Wang’s neighbors are not friendly to stray animals at all. So far no one knows who exactly threw so many dogs down the water channel. And Mrs. Wang said very often they would see dead dog bodies floating on the channel. Quite a few stray dogs had been poisoned to death because they were too hungry and broke the rubbish bags trying to find some leftovers to eat outside neighbor’s front door. Dr. Lin then decided to adopt Changmi from Mrs. Wang and started looking for a good home for Changmi in Canada where she will be loved and pampered and this lovely faithful gentle giant deserves that.

Changmi has a lovely personality. She gets along with dogs and cats very well. Whenever we call her name, she would be extremely happy and waive her tail so hard seems like her big bum is falling off. Changmi loves to be with people. She would put her head on my lap wanting me to pat her whenever I sit in front of the computer. She will be a wonderful family dog because she is very gentle with children. She is toilet trained and at the moment we are training her to use leash and harness.
According to the X-ray of her left rear leg, she had a fracture sometime before. We are not sure Changmi had been hit by car during her straying life or it was caused by been thrown down the water channel. This fracture is not healed completely yet but will not affect her from walking.

Have you fallen in love with our loyal Changmi? She is a very affectionate big girl, and if you would like to add a stable and loyal furry kid into your family, Changmi would be the one. She will love you back more than you could think of. Thank you for considering giving Changmi a forever home.
