Indy's original owners took him to the vet for vaccinations and were told that he was deaf (a common result of merle-to-merle breeding). They dropped the little puppy off at the local rural shelter on the way home, because they needed a working dog. He was about 3 months old when we picked him up from the shelter the next day.
He's now a year and a half old, and ready for the right home. Indy loves people and gets along most of the time with other dogs. He might have been taken from his mom and litter too young, as he is still picking up some basic doggy social skills. A solid, well-rounded dog companion would be a good role model for him.
Indy is a smaller blue merle Aussie or heeler mix, possibly has some terrier in his background. He's a smart, personable boy who wants to play all day long! He loves people but he can be "mouthy" when he gets to playing. He is good with kids, but some might be fearful of his mouthiness
He gets along with most other dogs--very well, once he gets to know them. He loves going to doggy daycare! He has shown some curiosity about cats and he loves to chase squirrels. Indy is protective of food or special toys, with other dogs. He is house-trained, crate-trained, and has some basic obedience. He would benefit from more leash work and further training.
Indy is an adorable double blue merle boy who also has some vision issues (though he sees just fine!) He has been examined by an animal opthalmologist and the report is available. Indy is up-to-date on his vaccinations and is neutered, on heartworm/flea prevention, and microchipped.
He is playful and funny and a normal dog in almost every way. He doesn't know he can't hear!! Sharing your life with a deaf dog is very rewarding. We have resources (along with our personal experiences!) to share with any potential adopters about life with a deaf dog, including training tips.
Please also see the DDEAF website for more information about deaf dogs, as well as Amazing Aussies. We recommend only older, dog-wise children and a secure fence for families with deaf dogs.
