More About Topaz

Topaz is still with her owners but needs a new, cat-experienced home!

Please see her web page for more photos and info.: http://members.shaw.ca/faunadael/Adoption-Topaz.htm.

Topaz is a slender, pretty, independent 6 year-old girl. She originally came from a litter of partially feral kittens, but has lived as a house cat with access to outdoors on an acreage during the day. She likes to be stroked and held - on her own terms - and has been used to spending the evenings in the house, sleeping on the bed.

Topaz's life changed when two families blended and three more cats joined the household. Topaz's personality changed and her family says she has become unpredictable, sometimes biting and scratching family members, and now most of them are scared of her.

Unfortunately, one night Topaz bit the eleven-year-old daughter while the girl was sleeping. No one knows exactly what happened: perhaps the girl rolled over, and instead of simply moving away, Topaz reacted and bit her arm. The daughter had a bad reaction to the puncture wound. Her owners no longer trust her near their children, so Topaz has be relegated outdoors...and is NOT happy being an outside only cat.

Topaz has been outside since the beginning of the summer, but is not adapting to being an outdoor cat. Her owners think it is cruel to continue to force her to be outside, and have considered having her euthanised. They would like to find her a new home, and asked us for assistance.

Obviously Topaz should not live with small children, and likely not with other cats. (She lives with three other cats, but one is a "bully." Topaz and one of the cats just ignore each other). She currently is fine with their house dog (which does not chase cats). Topaz is very good in the house, does not scratch/claw the furniture and always used her litterbox.

While she doesn't immediately approach visitors, she is not intimidated by strangers and loves you if you have a nice treat! :-)

Topaz is spayed and tattooed, and her tattoo number will be transferred to her new owner for identification.

She needs an experienced owner, who is able to recognize very subtle signals in Topaz's behaviour and will use only positive methods to discourage potential biting. ("Spanking" or chastizing a cat will only make such behaviour worse).

Topaz lives south of Duncan, near Cobble Hill, on Vancouver Island.

Please contact us for more information or to meet Topaz. Despite her quirky personality, she is a nice cat who deserves a great home.
