More About Petey

SPECIAL NEEDS GREYHOUND---NO ADOPTION FEE--- As you can see from his photos, Petey is a very handsome fellow. He is gentle, playful and is already home acclimated. He has beautiful markings, an especially handsome face, and is just as sweet as he looks in his photos.
In fact, Petey is perfect in every way but one. We have recently discovered that Petey has diabetes, which is very rare in greyhounds. When we first discovered his condition, Petey's sugar levels were dangerously high. Dr. Kevin Fontenot has worked with Petey to get his sugar levels adjusted, and he is now doing well. He will need two doses of Vetsulin (insulin for dogs) each day injected under the skin. It is also important that he be kept on a schedule with his insulin and that he eat at regular times. We are planning on supply ing his Vetsulin even after he is adopted. At present, the makers of Vetsulin, Schering-Plough Animal Health, have very generously donated the Vetsulin Petey needs.
Petey is a truly special greyhound who is happy all the time, loves his people, and constantly follows them around the house. His nickname is "Petey the Sweetie" because of his affectionate and loving temperment. He loves to swim (really!), go for walks, and play with squeaky toys. He will eat the stuffing out of stuffie toys, so he needs to have the rubber type of toys. Petey also enjoys dining with humans at restaurants that allow dog dining in their outside areas. He is well-behaved, completely house trained, very affectionate, loves children and people of all ages. He is also a kisser, and loves to "roo" (a greyhound sort of howl--see photo) . If you start it, he will respond in kind. Petey is also pretty smart. He knows the sit , down, and come commands.
Petey is a little smaller than average for a greyhound at about 68 lbs.
You sometimes hear about dogs being having an uncanny ability to sense when people are having a medical problem even before they know themselves. Recently, Petey's foster mom and BAGA volunteer, Marie, who is a diabetic herself, was out at an adoption event with Petey. Her blood sugar was becoming dangerously low and Petey alerted her. It is amazing that he knew, but he somehow did know. This has happened a couple of times, and each time Petey has alerted Marie. You might say that she has helped him and he has helped her.
Maybe you already have a diabetic cat or dog and are familiar with the insulin routine, or maybe you have diabetes yourself and understand that the injections Petey needs are not a big deal. Petey is already neutered, has had his teeth cleaned, all vaccines, 3-yr rabies, and microchip. He also will come to you with his collar and leash, adoption guide, grooming mit, and tooth gel. He will have NO ADOPTION FEE and the medications for his diabetes will be supplied to you. His foster mom, Marie, has vast experience with a diabetic dog, and can give you all the information about his care. Petey may not be perfect physically, but he will reward you many times over with his unconditional love and companionship. Petey is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.
