More About PA Buddy PENN
Update 08-19-09: Nothing has changed since last month. Buddy is still taking two different medications for his allergies and thyroid condition. He takes his pills like a champ. Buddy likes to go for walks and ride in the car. He would do best in a home with no other animals. He is not much of a cuddler, but will lay in bed with myself and my husband. He will start out in bed with us but then go to his bed to finish out the night. Buddy knows a few tricks, sit, shake and lay down. You just point to the floor for him to lay down and he will walk his front legs down until he is laying on the floor. It's really cute. Buddy needs bathed at least once a week. his skin and hair gets oily. I have special shampoo I use on him. Buddy would make a wonderful addition to someone's family. Could it be your family?
Update 07-10-09: Buddy is doing well. His allergy problem is under control with the medications he is on. He got groomed again on June 24, he is a pretty good boy but doesn't sit still to get the hair around his eyes clipped. I have to help the groomer hold him. Buddy LOVES to go for walks and will even put his head through the harness. All I have to say is do you want to go for a walk and he will go and sit by the door. Buddy also LOVES to go for car rides. He is a good boy when its bath time and loves to lay in his dog bed or sleep on the bed with me and my husband. I have been finding out Buddy can do tricks. He sits by himself and will bat both of his front paws at you. When I give him treats I ask him to sit and shake. He does. It is so cute when he lifts his left paw to shake. I think he might know more. I am trying to get him to roll over. He hasn't done it yet.....but give me time....I think he will. Buddy likes to be outside......but he will bark at other people he sees....but after I tell him it's OK, they are in their own yard he will walk away. Buddy does not get along well with other dogs so I feel it is best for him to go to a home with no other animals. Buddy is such a good boy and really would love to find his forever home. If you think your home could be the one.....please fill out an adoption application for Buddy......he would make a wonderful addition to your family.
Update 06/01/09: Buddy's allergy problem is under control. He doesn't scratch anymore. It was determined he has a thyroid condition. Medication is helping him tremendously. Buddy takes his pills like a champ. Never a problem with that. Buddy is a sweet little fellow. He doesn't like to give a lot of kisses.....but when you rub his belly when he wants it rubbed and keep talking to him and telling him he is a good boy....he will sneek a kiss to you. He does it pretty fast....so be prepared. Buddy likes to sleep in his own dog bed at night......for the most part. He has slept in bed with myself and my husband, but usually hops down in the middle of the night and goes into his own bed. I have three dog beds in our bedrrom on the floor by our bed with lots of blankets in them. The softer the better. Buddy doesn't do well with other dogs. It would be best for him to go to home with no other dogs or small children. Buddy doesn't like to be picked up that much. He will lay beside you on the couch or lay on his dog bed I have in the family room for him. Buddy would make someone very happy. He sleeps through the night and goes outside to potty. Buddy favorite thing is to go on walks. All you have to say is do you want to go for a walk?He will sit by the door and wait for you to put his harness on him. He actually puts his head through it for you. He knows the routine. Buddy also is good when I give him a bath. He gets a bath once a week with special shampoo for his skin. Buddy will make someone very happy and be a great addition to your family. Could it be your family?
Update 04/02/09: I took Buddy back to my vet on March 10 to have two lumps checked; one under his chin and another one between his eyes. After an examination by my vet, he said to bring Bubby back next week, and he would remove both lumps. He said they were nothing to worry about but thought it would be a good idea to have them removed. Buddy went back to the vets on March 17 and had both lumps removed. Both of them turned out to be cysts. The one under his chin was a hair follicle where the hair was growing under his skin then formed a cysts. The one between his eyes was just a cysts. Nothing to worry about it. Buddy also had another T-4 blood test done to recheck his thyroid. My vet increased his dosage of soloxine to one full tablet in the morning and a half a tablet in the evening. Buddy also gets a half a tablet of Temaril P every twelve hours. This has helped immensely. Buddy does not scratch at all. I still give him baths with the medicated shampoo. That also helps. I can't begin to tell you how far Buddy has come from the scared, thin very matted little boy who was found as a stray. He is so happy. He goes outside to potty, loves riding in the car and especially LOVES going for walks. He takes his pills like a champ. I never have any problems with that. He gets excited when I come home from work. He is so happy to see myself and my husband. He has been sleeping more in bed with us but will usually get into his own bed sometime through the night. I have a dog bed in our family room as well as a soft sided dog house. Buddy loves to go inside the dog house. He loves to lay on the dog beds I have through out the house. Buddy gets along with my dogs, but not with any new dogs who come to visit. I feel Buddy will do well in a home being the only dog. Buddy was also recently groomed on March 26. He is such a loving dog and will make someone very happy......could you be the one for Buddy?
Update 02/13/09: Buddy has recently been to the vet for a skin condition. He has been scratching and biting his paws on a pretty consistence basis. I took Buddy to my vet on January 27, 09. My vet did a skin biopsy which he then had a pathology test done. He wanted to run several tests to see what the problem could be. The Biopsy says a pyoderma (bacterial skin infection ) with secondary hair follicle dysplasia ( failure of hair follicle to grow) which may suggest thyroid disease. My vet then said he wanted to do thyroid function blood test id next. I took Buddy back to my vet on 2/10/09 for blood work. My vet gave me at that time prednisolone pills to give him, a half a tablet once a day for five days then a half a tablet once a day every other day. I only have seven pills in the bottle. The blood test came back the next day and it showed Buddy has a thyroid condition. So he is now on soloxine pills, a half a tablet every 12 hours. I also purchased relief shampoo and I am to bath him once a week. Buddy is to be fed dog food with lamb and rice only. No other ingredients in it. Buddy gets another blood test done in six weeks. I gave Buddy a bath on Tuesday with the new shampoo .He doesn’t mind getting a bath. It is only going on three days with his new medication and I can say he doesn’t bit at his paws as much, especially through the night. Buddy is a great dog. He greets us and is so happy to see us when we come home. He potty’s outside and sleeps through the night without having to go out. He loves getting treats and occasionally will sleep in bed with myself and my husband. But he is usually content sleeping in his own bed beside ours. I cover him up every night with his blanket and give him a kiss goodnight and tell him he is a good boy. As soon as we go upstairs to bed, Buddy lies right in his bed, and he gives me this look like, OK Mom I’m ready for you to tuck me in and say goodnight. As soon as I see him looking at me, I immediately cover him up and kiss him goodnight. He actually then snuggles his head into his blanket and goes to sleep. It’s so cute. He will definitely be a great addition to someone’s family……could it be you?
update 12/12/08: Buddy still has problems with his rash. I got a re-fill on his allergy medication and I give him a quarter of a pill a day. On days where he is really scratching, I give him a quarter of a pill twice a day. I rub alcohol on him as well. That helps to clear up the areas he has inflamed. He is a good boy with taking his pills and letting me rub alcohol on him. Buddy gets along fine with my dogs, but recently my parents came for a visit. They brought their dog with them. He is a Yorkie also. Buddy did not get along with him at all. Buddy was showing a lot of aggression towards him. I had to keep the two of them separated. In light of this situation, I would say Buddy would do well in a home with no dogs. Even though he gets along fine with my boys. Buddy likes sleeping in his own bed. He is welcome to sleep with myself and my husband and all of our fur kids, but Buddy prefers to sleep by himself. I can’t blame him really. More room for him sleeping in his own bed. He is a very loveable guy. He has recently started playing with my fur kid Star. Buddy does lay on the couch with all of my dogs and even lets the other dogs sleep with him in his bed……..one at a time though.
Update 11/04/08: I took Buddy…….aka Bubby……which is what I do call him and he answers to it, to my vet on Oct 21. My vet checked his teeth and determined his age to be six years old. Buddy also had a rash. My vet determined it was due to allergies. He gave me two different pills to give to Buddy for his rash, and also gave him a shot and a spray. The shot was a voren shot and the pills Buddy was given is Temaril-P tablets and Cefpodoxime proxetil pills. I also got a spray for him called Relief HC Spray. Buddy is done taking the Cefpodoxime pills. The Temaril – P tablets are being given to him as needed. I use the spray as needed also. I also have been putting alcohol on a cotton ball and rubbing it over his tummy and between his back legs. It has cleared up his skin better than the spray. After having Buddy a few weeks now, I can tell you he is a sweet boy. He sleeps through the night and goes out to potty when I get up. He does not mark in the house anymore. Buddy is welcome to sleep in bed with my husband and me, but he prefers to sleep in his own bed right next to ours. I always make sure Buddy is covered up. He loves to be covered up under his very own blanket. OK, I have three blankets I put in his bed and cover him up with whichever one he is not laying on. If he is laying on all three of them, then I get another blanket to cover him up with. When it comes to feeding time, I feed all my dogs at the same time in the same room…. my kitchen. Buddy does have a tendency to guard his bowl, and walk over to the other food bowls to eat that food as well. Although, he doesn’t finish all the food in the bowls. I believe this came from his time that he was a stray. Who knows how long he went without eating, and when he did find food, I’m sure he wanted it to himself. He is getting better with this issue. I put all the food bowls down at once, which there are six bowls. When I see Buddy ready to walk away from his bowl, I tell him no, and show him he still has more food in his bowl. I try and make him know no one is going to get his food. He is real good about waiting for his treats. I give him animal crackers. He is a good boy with waiting his turn. He notices I go from one fur kid to the next. He waits patiently for his. He also knows a trick. If he wants something, like a treat, he jumps up on the couch and puts his paw on my shoulder and whimpers. Then when I look at him, he sits and bats both of his front paws at me. It’s so cute……. Buddy would do well in a home with either no other dogs, or small dogs of his same size. No small children
ORIGINAL BIO: 10/09/08: Original Bio 10/09/08: Not much info on this little guy. Here is what I know. I received a call from the Humane League of Lancaster County in PA who asked if I would be willing to come and get this boy. He was there for three days before I received the call. Of course I went to get him.
He was found as a stray. A couple saw him wondering the streets and was able to get him and took him to the shelter. Don’t know his name. But I started calling him various names and when I started calling him a name with a “B” he would look at me. I called him Bubby and or Buddy and he would look at me. So I started calling him Buddy. He is neutered and up to date on all of his shots.
Not sure of his age. The shelter thought he is an older dog. He wouldn’t let them look at his teeth and gums to try and determine an age. He was too scared. After seeing him for myself, he is very thin. I had him groomed. His fur was so matted. He is very thin, and his eyes look a little cloudy. I am guessing he is 7 or 8. His weight is 7 lbs.
I am taking him to my vet to try and have him determine his age. He goes up and down steps with no problem. The shelter neutered Buddy, and while he was having the procedure done, the vet noticed a mass under his chin. The vet removed the mass, it was determined it was filled with fluid. The vet does not think it was cancerous and just told me to keep an eye on that area. He has stitches under his chin. When I first got Buddy home, he was marking through out the house. But I kept taking him outside and by the time he came inside, he didn’t have any urine left to mark like he thought he was doing. He has since stopped that. He knows which door leads to the back yard, and goes right to that door when he wants left outside. Otherwise, he likes to sleep a lot. He gets along well with my other fur kids. Although, he pretty much likes to be left alone. He was continually smelling my guys when I got him home, but that has almost stopped. Over all, he is a sweet boy. I have been giving him lots of attention. His appetite is not the best. But he does eat some of the wet food when I give it to him in the morning and early evening. He likes animal crackers. Dry food is always out for him.
I think Buddy would do well in a home with small dogs. He allows you to pick him up, but doesn’t like to be held very long. So a home with no young children would be best. He likes to ride in the car.
ADOPTION APPLICATIONS: Please visit our website at http://unitedyorkierescue.org , or complete an Application for Adoption. IT IS NECESSARY TO ENTER AN ANSWER IN EACH AREA OF THE APPLICATION. IF NECESSARY, PLEASE, PUT "NO" OR "N/A" IN THE PROVIDED SPACE. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS CANNOT BE PROCESSED. ALL references will be checked and home visits will be done.
ADOPTION DONATIONS: Adoption donations are based on but not limited to: health, age, and sex of the pup. Adoption donations range from $50-$600. You may ask, "Why would you charge an adoption fee? Why not just place in a good home?" The answer is: because we rely heavily on these adoption fees in order to be able to take in ALL Yorkies in need. A young, healthy dog may cost us $200-400 in vet care, and have many homes interested in adopting him/her. An older or sick Yorkie, or one with health issues can easily cost $500-1500+ in veterinary expenses. He/she may require months of foster care for rehabilitation or expensive surgery; yet we can only ask a minimal adoption fee. Often times these are also the same dogs that don't receive as many inquires for adoption. Please keep in mind that the adoption donations of younger, healthy dogs help defray the higher costs of the veterinary care of older, injured or sick dogs. We hope that people looking to adopt through Yorkies Inc. are willing to give an opportunity for a better life to ALL of our dogs by supporting them through adoption fees. We are a non-profit organization. Without these adoption donations we would not have the funding to take in all Yorkies in need. Yorkies Inc. completely vets every dog we take in. All dogs are groomed given a complete exam and brought up to date on all vaccines. They are also given a dental cleanings, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested and any medical needs and needed surgeries are met before placement.
CHOOSING HOMES: All adoption applications will be thoroughly reviewed; will need three personal references and a reference from your vet. All of your present pets must be up to date on shots and on heartworm prevention. Homes with Yorkie experience and fenced in yards are given first preference.
CHILDREN: Due to their size, personality and legal liabilities, we are very cautious when adopting to a home with children. Unless you have a strong background with the breed, each application will be reviewed on case by case.
TRANSPORTS: UYR DOES NOT SHIP ITS DOGS. We try when we can to assist with transporting rescues to their new families but expect the families to help. We do adopt out-of-state, however, the primary responsibility of the transport is the adopters, but we will assist to whatever extent possible.
REMEMBER: Rescued animals are by no means perfect or show quality. They are usually from Puppy Mills, bad breeding, unwanted, abandoned, sick or old. Almost never will we get in a small young female. Rarely do we have a lot of background on our rescues. ALL of our rescues will be altered prior to adoptions with no exceptions.
If you think a rescue is for you, meet our criteria and have a good loving home to offer, please visit our website and fill out an adoption application today at: UYR Application for Adoption
