Meet Blackjack
Blackjack was brought into the shelter when the person who had been looking after this young stray was unexpectedly called up for military service, and it suddenly became urgent that Blackjack get into a safe environment. He was neutered, tested and vaccinated, and the vet tipped his ear, just in case he could only find a home as a barn cat. But he’s a better candidate as a companion cat, as he is not feral. He was frightened at first, unsure of his environment and his role among the other cats in the cat room, and it took him a few weeks to venture out of his cage. But he’s now a very happy young cat who is eager to leave his cage every chance he gets, and enjoys being pet by his volunteers, even though he is still a bit anxious about being picked up.
Blackjack is now rediscovering his “inner kitten,” playing with toys and getting into the occasional mischief. He’s a submissive cat who enjoys hanging out with the other shelter cats, like his buddy Clarence, so he should do well in a home with other cats. But not dogs! He tested very poorly with a shelter dog, showing a great deal of fear, so he probably had a terrible encounter with a dog at some point. While he should be fine with older children, he might be wary of small active children.
Blackjack is estimated to be between 1 and 2 years of age, is box-trained, neutered, current on vaccinations, and tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia. He has received dewormers and a flea treatment. Adoption fee for adult cats is $50 (credit card, check or money order payable to “Town of Scituate” — no cash, please!). For more information or an application, email ClayvilleCritters@cox.net, call the shelter at (401) 647-7200, or visit the shelter during regular hours: Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri 7 to 11 a.m., Sat 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
