Cyrus is an upbeat, loving and sweet Schnauzer/Terrier mix weighing about 16-17 lbs. He was rescued from the Devore Animal Shelter and was marked as age four, but my rescue vet and I both agree that he is closer to age three. Cyrus is a scruffy-coated dog, which is low to no shedding. Cyrus is cuter than cute - he is adorable. He has loving, warm eyes, a very cute face, and ears that go straight upward. There are some other playful dogs in my current pack, and Cyrus is the forerunner of play, which is so typical of his breed. They can play and play, and Cyrus loves to take chase and have all the other dogs chase after him (see video). He is very fast! Even though Cyrus is very playful (providing there are also other dogs around that like to play); he can also settle down and just chill near me.

Cyrus is an intelligent dog that can learn things quickly, therefore, he would LOVE formal training because he would relish in learning commands or even tricks. Cyrus learned the rescue routine quickly and does well overall; occasionally he gets mischievous and pushes limits, but nothing a strong voice command will not address. In fact, Cyrus responds to correction well and takes a submissive stance to me.

Cyrus is crate-trained as well as potty-trained (however potty reinforcement is needed in any new environment), and is not considered a “marker.” (Dogs here at the rescue are crated to eat, sleep, and when folks are gone from home and Cyrus has done very well.) He loves his little raw hide sticks at bedtime. I have seen a protective side to Cyrus of barking at the fence-line if someone comes near. When he meets new people, his reaction is to initially bark; however, as soon as Cyrus sees that a person is nice and wants to be friends, he warms up within a minute. He can also be “mouthy” so an adopter would need to continue working on that. Mouthy is when a dog never learned that puppy play biting is no longer acceptable. It does not hurt; he is communicating with his mouth like many dog breeds do; yet and still, I correct him if he does this. The aforementioned is very typical to the Schnauzer and terrier breeds and people who have owned dogs of this breed-type will be familiar with these traits, and understand that they are merely a training issue. Overall, Cyrus is super affectionate and people-oriented, and will submit to the authority of the human owner.

Cyrus is a great little dog to do activities with and/or be a companion to another dog. He would relish in doing new things, agility, taking walks, hikes, short runs (we do not adopt for longer running as forced exercise can lead to early onset injuries, and eventually surgeries, in dogs).

The home I seek for Cyrus is a home with another young, playful dog. The dog can be his size or a bit larger as long as that dog is good with smaller dogs and will not harm him with too rough play. I personally think Cyrus’s best fit is with a female, however, depending on the male dog, he is also fine. Cyrus is a good match to be adopted together with Benson, because they know each other, like each other, and play well together, but it is not my expectation, nor is it my requirement, that they be adopted together. Some semblance of a yard is a huge plus. I can also consider homes where there is no other dog, but where there are some compensatory activities, and, ongoing dog/dog socialization.

NOTE: We only adopt dogs as primarily INDOOR dogs. Dogs can go outside to play, potty, to sun themselves at will, but should never be excluded to an outside area. You do not need to give a dog the run of the entire house, and an appropriate sized wire crate works very well during a transitional phase.
