Trevor is a happy, loving and affectionate, playful, sweet, and sometimes goofy one-year-old German shepherd/Husky mix rescued from the Devore Animal Shelter. He loves life and is full of happiness and love for everyone. He weighs about 50 lbs. and is still very much a puppy. He longs to play with the other dogs here, but most are all older, and have little interest in playing. At times his puppy antics have been a bit annoying to the other dogs, but generally, he has gotten along well in the pack. He loves playing with various toys, entertaining himself (though he has a preference for the stuffed type, and then mainly wants to rip them up eventually?. I have tried to redirect him to some of the harder, more durable chewing type toys). His grooming needs are regular brushing, to reduce shedding and the occasional bath.

Trevor is potty trained (however, potty reinforcement is recommended in any new environment). He is crate-trained (here at the rescue, dogs are crated to eat, sleep, and if I am away from home for a bit, mainly for structure and boundaries). Trevor is not yet ready to be left non-crated; i.e., not fully trusted to not get into something that he is not supposed to get into. The 42 inch wire crate works VERY well for Trevor at this time, and should be continued in an adoptive home, when no one is around to supervise him, until such time that Trevor can be left unsupervised outside of the crate.

We like to use prong collars for our larger dogs, because we want to get them walking well on the leash right away. This is a useful tool and not “mean” when used properly. It represents the mama dog picking up the pups by way of the mouth to bring them back into the fold, and is a naturally occurring understood correction in the brain of the dog. Trevor was in a foster home for three days where the Foster mom had the ability to walk him (I have a health condition) and also see him in a different light. Trevor did well walking on the leash, and this foster home also had kittens, and Trevor was sweet and loving to the kittens, giving them kisses. Trevor has traveled in the car, but he does get anxious with car rides, which has been demonstrated by some excess salivation during the drive; other than this, he handles the drive appropriately.

If I am lying down, working at the computer, or watching T.V., Trevor finds a place near me to chill and be near (he is VERY much a Velcro dog). However, if I get up and walk around, Trevor shadows me constantly, always wondering with fascination what I am doing, or occasionally attempting to be playful. I have taught him that there is an imaginary line into the kitchen that he cannot cross, and he learned right away to respect that, and also, he is not allowed to follow me into the bathroom, or other certain rooms. Trevor wants to please, and he seems to be smart and learns well, though he still has to be reminded a lot, again, due to him still being a puppy. He has also learned to chase the ball and bring it back to me. In short, Trever does quite well overall, but as most young dogs do, needs ongoing structure and boundaries training, and also seems to enjoy being trained.

Overall, Trevor is a very human-oriented, dog-oriented, friendly pup who being a German shepherd type, you can tell that he really wants a job to do, even if that job is taking a daily walk, and learning new things (German Shepherd types RELISH in training – it gives them the proper mental stimulation and consequently, mental satisfaction – one does not need to run the heck out of any young dog, as many confusingly think, or be exercised constantly. You would be surprised how just a few structured things daily can make all the difference in the world to keep most young dogs happy and satisfied).

The home I seek for Trevor, that I believe will fit him best, is with people who will give him regular structured walks (or hikes), or some other type of ongoing activity, which will give him a purpose and something to do, and also provide him with some formal training because he wants that, and dogs of this breed type relish in that. I personally feel that he would be happiest and do best in a home that has another dog that would be willing to play with him, and also offer him some canine companionship (and thus possibly reducing the need for other types of tasks). Trevor LONGS for another dog to play with him, and as long as the other dog in the home is not annoyed by Trevor wanting to play, could even have a smaller canine friend. The home should be one where collectively, folks are not gone from home for long, extended hours on a daily basis (and no, this does not mean you need to be retired).

NOTE: We only adopt dogs as primarily INDOOR dogs no matter the size, or shedding. Dogs can go outside to play, potty, at will, but should never be excluded to an outside area. We really appreciate when people take the time to set house manners and boundaries, instead of putting dogs outside. You do not need to give a dog the run of the entire house, (you can put up a tall baby gate, close off room doors) and a crate is good for a transitional phase.
