Meet Sherman

Calling all Dane Lovers!!!!!

Have you been bitting your nails just waiting for us to take in the most amazing and magnificent specimen of a Great Dane?!?!? Us too!

May we present to you, Sherman! This 6-7 month old boy is deaf and blind, but that doesn't slow him down one bit. The gentle giant is incredible with other dogs, great with kids (even smaller ones) and housebroken (bonus). He is working on touch commands for "sit" and "down" and learning to relax in his crate. We are looking for a dane savvy home for this boy, or a home with experience with special needs dogs. Sherman is being fostered by Central Virginia Fostering and you can see more photos and videos on their facebook page!

Sweet deaf and blind Dane pup, Sherman, comes to us from a family wanting to give this boy the best possible life. We have only had him in foster since May 13th, and are still learning bits and pieces about his personality, but basically he is just a sweet boy who loves to snuggle and should quickly bond with his new family. If you can see this post, we have not yet chosen a forever family. Please continue reading and if you are interested AND meet the criteria listed below, please go ahead and complete an adoption application.

We are looking for an experienced 'Dane', extra large breed, and/or a family experienced with 'special needs' pups, for this handsome guy. Applications that do not match these guidelines will not be considered. Sherman has some separation concerns, so he will need a little patience, and a family where someone works from home or is home most of the time, at least until he gets settled in and is comfortable in his new digs. We feel that once he realizes he is safe with his forever family, and is getting lots of love and plenty of daily of exercise, he will be just fine.

He is great with kids and other dogs. A family with another dog to keep him company, would be optimal. That should help with the separation issues. The perfect scenario would be a fully fenced yard (since he cannot see or hear to keep himself out of trouble), but a family who will commit to daily leash walks and plenty of exercise and play time, will be considered. An electric fence is NOT appropriate and will not be considered.

*/*/* PLEASE NOTE: The first communication you will receive after completing an application will be via email. Please keep an eye on your inbox AND spam folders, just in case. */*/*

We are happy to consider applicants from out of state. However, if the applicant is approved, they must be willing to come to our location in Troy, VA, for a meet and greet. If all parties agree that the pup and family are a good fit, they would take the pup home at that time.

GDU does ask a minimum adoption donation of 300.00. This is a minimum donation and does not cover all expenses, as we are funded solely by the angels and volunteers willing to donate time and finances. This minimum donation includes DAPP, rabies if age appropriate,, heartworm test and preventative, if age appropriate, and flea and tick treatment, as well as neutering or spaying if the animal is medically sound to undergo surgery. This minimum donation does not even begin to cover the actual expenses each animal has while in rescue, but does go directly towards vet care for our rescue animals. In an attempt to avoid tummy upset from a sudden change of food, the foster family may include a small, transitional bag of the food the dog/puppy has been eating. And if the dog/puppy has grown attached to a special item (like a toy or blanket), they may send that along, as well.
