Meet (Hurricane) Harvey

The day hurricane Harvey was slamming Houston, we were notified of a sickly stray that showed up at a trailer park in Berwick. He looked like he was through a hurricane himself. It was a no-brainer to name him Harvey.

Harvey was dirty, stinky and emaciated. He had one eye that had been surgically removed. He was neutered. He was somebody's at one time. Was he lost or was he discarded, we will never know. Even in all his pain and with all his issues above all Harvey was a friendly and social fellow. Even then he purred as soon as he was pet.

We rushed him to the vet and learned he had a mouth full of rotten teeth and that's why he was not well groomed. He had an upper respiratory infection and could barely breathe through his nose due to severe congestion. He had open sores on his feet with flesh hanging out. He probably didn't have much time left on his own outside.

Foster mom Peg in Catawissa stepped forward to help Harvey mend. It would take several months. The first step was getting his feet healed since he was too sick to go through a dental procedure at that time.

We found out Harvey had extra toes and his dew claws were embedded into his foot pads which became infected and abscessed. After several treatments and bandage changes his foot pads made a full recovery. After a bath he smelled and looked a lot better too. He's put on 3 pounds in 2 months since he was found at a meager 7 1/2 pounds.

He then went for a dental at the end of September and had all but three teeth removed. Even that night when Peg was taking his IV tape off, he was purring.

Harvey is a sweetheart no doubt about it. He makes friends with everyone he meets. He likes other cats and gets along with dogs too. He seems unfazed by most things. The vet estimates Harvey to be 7-8 years old. We think he would be good with children and other pets.

Harvey is a FeLV/FIV negative, up-to-date on shots, neutered, litter trained and even has extra toes! He is currently in his foster home in Catawissa and by the end of November will be featured at the Lewisburg cat café, The Scratching Post.
