Gemma - courtesy listing ONLY Rat Terrier & Terrier Mix Uvalde, TX

Gemma (pronounced with a soft G, like a gemstone) is a rat-terrier/Russel terrier mix, as far as I can tell.

She is a young, adult dog, with plenty of energy and love for people. She is great with the kids and the cat, and loves to meet new friends (human, dog, or cat).

She is house-trained, has had all her shots, and the vet told us that she's been fixed.

We found her in our front yard about a year ago, where someone abandoned her. Where we live abandoned or lost pets are common, so we asked around to see if anyone owned her. It turned out that she had been abandoned, and had two previous owners. She has a tendency to wander, and the previous owners did not have a properly installed fence, so they abandoned her.

Unfortunately we are not allowed to have animals in the home we rent, so we cannot let her inside. The fence around our rented property is also very poor, and though we've done our best to secure it, Gemma is small and athletic enough to find a way out when she really wants to. She is not an escape artist, but we frequently take her with us when visiting neighbors, so she will sometimes leave the yard when she sees one of her "friends" pass by.

A few months ago she started chasing our chickens and has since killed a few.

We wish to list Gemma on Petfinder so that she can find a home that better suits her. A home where she can be inside with her people, in a well-fenced yard free of chickens. The only reason we recommend no chickens is because she has killed a few, but I think even so it may not be a problem if she is able to come inside the house with her family.

Gemma is a very sweet dog who is a friend to everyone.. She thrives when we have neighborhood parties with lots of people, children, and dogs, and she loves to play with our cat. She is happy to go and meet new friends wherever the wind blows her, and doesn't have a mean bone in her body..

She loves long trail rides, walks great on a leash after just a few minutes of burning off a little energy, and loves to simply bask in the presence of her people.

She is easily pleased, and responds best to praise and petting for rewards. She loves a treat as much as any dog, but really what she loves most is a few kind words and a belly rub.

She'll get really excited if kids get on a battery-powered tractor or kabota, and run along with them (she also loves running alongside the real thing).

She is very eager to please, and just needs a lot of gentle and positive encouragement, and little dedication to help reinforce commands.
