Meet Rocky - a very handsome and dapper 24-lb Boston Terrier born 9/21/14. Adopted from a Colorado animal shelter in April 2015, Rocky was very loved by his owners but, when they had to move in with a relative that didn't care for dogs, poor Rocky was having to spend 20 hours a day in his crate. As much as it broke their hearts to do so, his owners wanted Rocky to have a better life so they asked us to take him in and find him a home where he'd be welcome and loved. This shouldn't be hard to do or take very long because Rocky is just a really great dog! We were told that Rocky 'doesn't potty in his crate' but is only 'somewhat' house-trained so his new owner needs the patience, experience and time to work with Rocky on this. His owners also told us that Rocky is 'good' around children, doesn't like dogs bigger than him and can be physical and overly playful with smaller dogs, is good on leash and in the car, and that he'll play with any toy but balls are his favorites. Rocky seemed a little too interested in the cat and kitten in our lobby when he was surrendered so we're not sure if he'd be a good candidate for households that have cats. What we immediately noticed about Rocky, though, is how super-friendly and affectionate he is. He just climbs right up on your lap and is just a real people-dog. If you aren't familiar with the breed, the Boston Terrier usually makes a great family dog and loves playing with older, well-mannered children. It doesn't, however, tolerate rough handling and isn't considered a good candidate for households with young or rowdy children. Although playful, the Boston Terrier is not considered a high-energy dog and is usually happy with a good daily walk and a playtime or two. They do get excited easily, though, and tend to jump on people as a greeting. The breed is prone to heatstroke and its short muzzle can cause breathing difficulties (and snoring). Because of this, exercise should be avoided during the heat of the day in hot climates or in the summer and the dog should always have access to plenty of shade on sunny days. Bostons love to learn but can be stubborn - training should be structured yet fun. While this breed does shed, grooming needs are easily met and consist of twice weekly brushing with a soft bristle brush. Any skin wrinkles on the muzzle should be cleaned daily. With an average life span of 11 to 13 years, Rocky still has a lot of years to add a ton of laughter and love to some lucky household.
