Meet Elka

Elka is 7 years old but is full of lots of energy.

My name is Elka Mae and I have been searching for my forever people for close to a year now. Please read and share my story so my forever people can find me.

So I guess my story starts in Elkhart Indiana. I was picked up as a stray and brought to a shelter there. I was so terrified there and didn’t know what was happening. There was so much noise and so many scared dogs just like me. That is when Mit Liebe came to my rescue. They took me out of the shelter and brought me to a boarding facility in Wisconsin. I was still so scared; more new people, and dogs and rooms. I really just missed my home; this world I found myself in was so strange to me. After my caretakers got to know me a bit they began to realize that I had been a backyard dog. I knew nothing about dealing with strangers/ or people overall. I knew nothing about being indoors or around other dogs. All I knew was my tiny square of this earth. My square with my dirt, and my jolly ball and the birds and critters who would pass thru and tease me with the freedom they had. My yard was the only life I knew.

It has been a busy year. I learned about the vet and went thru heartworm treatment. Then I learned how amazing running and playing fetch can be. I learned rain doesn’t get you wet inside and how great a warm dry place to stay can be. I learned that if you mind your manners people will pet your fur and rub your tummy and it feels wonderful. I worked on my leash manners and learned there is SO MUCH to see and do outside of my old yard. I learned how to live in a house with a person, and that love can help heal a lifetime of loneliness. I also learned that I have a whole heart full of love to share with my forever people.

So here is what I am looking for in my forever home:
No other pets. A fenced in yard so I can play fetch and run zoomies safely because of my previous confinement I’m not a fan of being tied out.
Time to take me out on walks, car rides and adventures. I missed so much during my back yard years and have to make up for it! I want to see it all.
No young kids. I still forget myself in my excitement and jump or mouth from time to time. Oh, and on a side note, I will still chase birds and small critters… just haven’t been able to let that behavior go.

Thank you for reading and sharing. I am hoping every day that they find me.
Love,
Elka Mae
