Meet Darla

Darla was adopted from us several months ago, but she had more energy and more training needs than her new owner was able to handle, so was returned. She is a dog that will take over if she doesn't have a leader, so we think she would do well with an owner that has previously trained a dog.

She had a few seizures over the last 5 months, and after extensive testing, including a very expensive MRI, it was determined that she has a malformation of the back of her skull, causing part of her brain (the cerebellum) to protrude a bit into the opening into the spinal canal. She does not need surgery or medication and is therefore ready for adoption. Her condition does not cause true seizures. The part of the brain that is affected helps to control balance and equilibrium. When Darla has these events, she can't coordinate her movements because of the pressure on that part of her brain and is dizzy and uncomfortable, but they are not painful. Once she is done having an episode, she is back to normal immediately, unlike with true seizures when a dog could take hours to become normal again.

She is a super sweet, 1-year-old dog and the chip registration information listed her as a Papillon/Chihuahua mix. She loves other dogs, loves to go for walks and greets everyone like an old friend. She loves toys but can be protective of her favorites ones. Darla's adoption fee is $150.

We give priority to people that fill out our adoption application, so if you are interested in meeting her, that is the first step.

E-mail inquiries about a dog are not considered an application. Please follow the link to fill out the application.

If a dog is listed on our website, that means that dog is still available for adoption. The Shelter is staffed primarily by volunteers so adoption meetings take place on Saturdays from 11 - 1:00 during adoption hours, or by appointment. Every dog we place is vaccinated, wormed, treated for ticks/fleas, tested for heartworm and Lyme and spayed/neutered prior to adoption. We send each dog home with a collar and leash and a month's worth of heartworm preventative. If a dog is listed on our website, they are still available for adoption. Please fill out the adoption application if you would like to be considered for a dog you see in our care.

With very few exceptions, dogs are happiest and the most well-behaved when they receive daily exercise and ongoing training, so we always prefer to place our dogs with families who are willing to make a commitment to both.
