Meet Pearlie Mae

Pearlie Mae was born in Oct 2015 and is a 2.8 lb. chihuahua. She has an open fontanel (skull plates are not joined) and hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain). This means she needs to live in a very well protected environment.

She is a favorite of the volunteers who are amazed at how far she has come since she was dumped on someone's doorstep. She lives in her own specially designed playpen to protect her from hard surfaces. For her safety, Pealie can not interact with other animals. EVER!

Pearlie stays in what we call her condo. It is a 4 x 4 pen with bumpers around the sides so she doesn't bump her head, an elevated area (by a couple inches) for sleep and play and a lower area that has her food and her potty pad.

Because she cannot hear or see well, and because of the open fontanel and hydrocephalus she needs to be kept in a safe area to prevent injury.

She is a free feeder in that there is always diluted puppy formula, soft food cut up into small bites and kibble out for her. These items are cleaned and changed when needed throughout the day. Her eating habits vary, some days a lot others not so much. Having food and drink available for her is essential because she sort of meanders around and eats when she gets to it. She takes her Prilosec twice daily...morning and evening. It is in pill form, and when a little cream cheese is smooshed around it she scarfs it up.

Pearlie has toys in her condo and she does play. Volunteers spend time with her in her condo for the needed loving and cuddling. When she was younger she was quite easy to hold, and seemed to be quite settled when being held. Now, she's a bit more feisty. She gets so excited when she knows someone is there and she runs around and gets into play stance and we usually watch her and at some point she decides it's time to cuddle and be held. She can be squirmy when being held, so sitting in the condo and holding her close to ground level is the safest.

Her condo is filled with washable pee pads and lots of soft blankets so there's some laundry that comes with Pearlie. We change pads and bedding as needed...pads obviously frequently. She's a wonderful little sleeper too. So, her day is sleeping, eating and playing much like any pup...but, she needs to take her meds and be kept safe.

Although Pearlie has special needs and requires support to eat, drink, and frolic, she is a strong willed little girl who has come a long way in our care. Pearlie has a life expectancy of about 10 years. She is cute as a button and is looking for a very special adopter to give her a chance.
