Meet Axel

Axel is one handsome dude! A solid 124 lbs, it’s a good thing he is both people and pet friendly. You may remember, Axel was from an Amish puppy mill farm. At 5 years of age, Axel was no longer producing pups. The farmer gave us 12 hours to remove Axel from the property, or he would shoot him. This “offer” was given during a blizzard, and we were 6 hours away. Thru another rescue, Axel was pulled to safety in time. However, he was definitely not healthy. Green discharge constantly poured from his nose, he was missing most of his body fur and his skin was full of brown flakes. Neither ear had fur and chronic ear infections had scarred the insides. His T4 was off the chart with his thyroid levels being so low. The good news is, here we are 8 months later and Axel is finally neutered, up to date on shots, and healthy. He is on an inexpensive daily thyroid medication for the rest of his life.

In general, Axel is a pretty easy guy although he will growl if you try to do something he does not agree with. Taking him to the vet for blood work involved a muzzle and some sedation. Shots in the butt he’s fine for but not drawing blood. He gets excited about riding in a vehicle while a lot of bellowing goes on out the window, announcing his arrival. For such a big guy, he walks really well on leash and enjoys exploring.
