Meet SCHMOHZ

One cold night in February 2015, friend to all strays Sandi D. and her gal pal Cheryl saw two cats hanging out on a porch at a house off of Division in downtown Grand Rapids. In typical fashion they set up a feeding station and kept refilling bowls each time they went by, calling ’kitty-kitty’ every time they were there; they would often hear crying in return but neither cat would come out from underneath the porch . Finally one fine day the bedraggled black and white guy started making himself visible when Sandi was ’safely’ back in her car, and after a few more visits where this little game was played, he actually let her give him some grub without running away. Her diligence paid off as yet on another day, while she was putting canned food in a dish, he actually let her pet him as he voraciously gobbled up tasty treat. At her very next visit she was able to live trap him in about two minutes! Sandi took him home and let him settle in, then to CSNIP where he was neutered , finally setting up an appointment for me to work him up for her on March 9th. We have an agreement that if one of her strays turns up positive for Feleuk or FIV thatI immediately take him into our program at Big Sids; on average our red-headed dynamo has 2-3 rescues in her home waiting for placement into our program at Crash’s so space is standing room only:) When her friendly fluff ball turned out to be a very strong FIV+, she bid him a sweet adieu and told him she would catch him on the flip-side - well, I am paraphrasing, but she lovingly said she would see him soon at the sanctuary.

Further exam of this 5 year old fella, who was born in early 2010 and had more than likely been living on the streets for most of his haggard existence, revealed a whole slew of issues: chronic herpes virus causing his left eye to water and run, dental disease and a significant heart murmur that THANKFULLY resolved within a few weeks! However, in spite of all that was going on within his underweight body, Schmohz as Sandi named him, was one happy camper, sporting extra toes that tried desperately to give me a thumbs-up in appreciation!

While at the clinic, Schmohz With The Toes proved to be an absolute gentleman, a real looker possessing a genuine charm and charisma that I found truly irresistible. Once at Sids he took the place by quiet storm, grabbing the attention of passers-by and luring them into his lair for languid cuddle time, canoodling and of course schmoozing! And once he had unpacked his bags and was allowed to roam the entire two-story facility (after his professional photo was taken and ID magnet made, he was immediately out and about with his new feline roomies, rubbing fuzzy elbows with like-minded, fun-loving individuals. In fact, making friends and having a good time is now what seems to be Schmohz’s goal in life, a job he is taking very seriously! I kid you not—this cat is so darned content and comfortable that I KNOW he would give me a high five with his Michigan-mitted paws if he could—he is just that enamored and enthused by his new life! And believe me, this is how WE feel about HIM—we are utterly smitten with him and his mittens!
