Meet Merlin
ADOPTION PENDING
Merlin is an 8 year old German Shepherd mix, a large dog but quite slim, weighing under 70 pounds.
Merlin is an excellent housedog, totally devoted to his family. He is reliably housebroken day and night, non-destructive, and matches his activity to what his people are doing. After being introduced, he is friendly with people and gets along well with other dogs, including small dogs. He is not accustomed to kids, but seems to tolerate them. I haven’t introduced him to cats (more below). He comes when called and does not bark excessively, although he will bark at strangers and other dogs. He doesn’t get on furniture, including the bed; he easily goes up and down the basement steps; and storms don’t bother him.
Merlin’s joy in life is walks. He gets very excited! We walk him with another dog once or twice a day. He is non-competitive and well-mannered, however I use a prong collar to get his attention when necessary. Right now, we go for 20 minutes, at a very moderate pace because of his heartworm treatment. He has quick reflexes and a surprising amount of energy for his age. He knows sit, down, stay and wait. His worst fault is that he will door dash because he doesn’t want to be left behind. He tends to lick, more so when he’s feeling anxious.
Prey drive: As with many shepherds, he likes to have a job, and he has decided that his job is ridding our yard (and garage) of rodents. We used to have a lot of mice and chipmunks, but they have moved out. He would dig up the voles if we let him. He is not an aggressive or mean dog. He does very well with our toy size dog, not so well (understandably) with the pet bird that has bitten him multiple times. Would he chase a cat in the house, probably not. Outside, I think he would, but he is easy to distract and very trainable. He works for praise. He is a wonderful dog.
Adoption Fee: $250
