Meet Matilda / "Tillie"

Matilda (Tillie) waltzed into Southwest English Setter Rescue in grand fashion. This 4 year young orange beauty is in fantastic shape and shows no signs of abuse or neglect. She was rescued from a North Texas shelter where she came in as a stray and her owners never came to reclaim her. Her body condition is very good and she is a strong girl with nice muscle tone. Her weight is good at 46 lbs and her appetite is great. Her coat is soft and full and she was already spayed. Both her fecal and heartworm tests were negative for any worms or parasites. She’s now up to date on vaccinations and ready to look for her furever home.

Tillie has the typical sweet and loving Setter personality and will bond quickly with the people in her new home. She comes up to strangers for pets and attention. She jumps up on you but not forceful enough to push you and she just wants attention and to be close to her people. This should be easy to gently correct when she settles in and knows she is home.

Tillie knows sit and is very treat motivated. She could use some manners training but nothing out of the norm for a young and energetic English Setter. She counter surfs and feels right at home jumping up on the furniture so she is probably going to do best in a home where she does have furniture privileges. She will do best in a home with someone that is dog savvy to train her and teach her manners. She is a strong girl and pulls a lot on leash and her new person will need to work on her leash training and she will do best in an easy walk harness. She’s not a dog for youngsters or older people to walk because she pulls and is strong. This will get better with work from her new person, we just don’t think she was ever leash trained.

Her enthusiasm when meeting other dogs may require controlled intros with some dogs. But she will be fine with dog friendly dogs in a matter of minutes or hours. She’s been in a temp foster and is now in a foster home where she met and was quickly fine with the dogs in the home. She runs and plays with the dogs in the home so we think she’ll be happiest in a home with another active dog or with a person that is home a lot and their life revolves around their dog.

Tillie seems to be a typical activity level for a 4 year old English Setter, she is definitely not on the crazy side of activity we sometimes find in our breed. It is too early to tell how much of a self-exerciser she will be in the yard but what we do know is that she wants to be where her people are so she is probably one of those Setters that will do best with an active family that gets her out and about for exercise. The first couple of days in a new home, she was at the back door looking in for her new person rather than running the yard with the other Setters. If you are sitting outside with her she is happy to run and explore in the yard. She seems fine in five foot non-privacy fences and so far has not shown any indication of fence climbing or jumping. She will need a home with a physical fence and at least a medium size yard. As long as she is getting plenty of exercise, she’ll be good and calm in the home.

Tillie is looking for a home without cats, inside or outside. She is very interested in cats and shows strong prey drive when a cat runs or corrects her.

She was a bit whiny in the crate the first couple of days but when she understood the routine and what is expected of her she settled right down and is a quiet and well behaved girl when crated. Her foster home reports that she is "completely housebroken, intelligent and quite a lover. Very Setter-like in her love of couches and laps".

Our Tillie is a delightful girl and will make a wonderful addition to some lucky family. She is in a foster home near Denver, Colorado. Check out her videos at our website www.swesr.org.
