Meet Haley

Meet Haley, brought from Kentucky to Ohio, this sweet little 15-pound, 4-6-year-old Chihuahua-pug mix (also known as a “chug”) had never set foot out of a cage. She had never walked on a leash, run, played or sniffed the grass. She had never felt the warmth of human touch or heard a kind word. Instead, her heartless owners bred her over and over again, always snatching her puppies away as Haley whimpered with despair.

“She was absolutely terrified when she arrived here,” said Haley's foster mom. “She was just getting over the loss of yet another litter of pups and had no experience at all with us humans. All she could think to do was crouch low to the ground and shake with fear.” Of course, all that was about to change. As terrified as she was, she didn’t protest when her fostermom gently scooped her into her arms. And as she held her close, Haley’s tiny body stopped shivering and she nestled against her foster mom's chest as if trying to make up for every lonely day of her painful 4-6 year ordeal.

“Haley is still a work in progress but it’s amazing how quickly she’s learning to trust,” said Haley's foster mom. “It’s like watching a newborn experience everything for the first time.” Of course, some of Haley’s progress is thanks to Haley's foster parent's own dogs, all of whom are veteran foster-siblings. Haley is especially fond of hound-mix Jessie, perhaps thinking of her as a surrogate mom. And it is Jessie who “convinced” Haley to try walking on a leash and to come to her foster parents to be loved. In short, Jessie and the gang are gently and patiently teaching Haley to be a dog.
