Hi my name is Sarge! I am a 7-year-old, 40 pound, Shepherd mix. I have been at the shelter for about 6 years.

I really like the staff and they take awesome care of me but I don’t warm up to very many people. I was adopted once and came back. You see I can be a little bit mouthy and have the tendency to try being the alpha. This tends to frighten people and they shy away from me. I don’t mean to I just feel uneasy with people who don’t have a dominant personality.

I did make a new friend recently. You see one day this new volunteer came and decided he wanted to spend time with me, I was very excited to get some attention but you see I needed to make sure that this person had an alpha personality and be in control of the situation. So I tested him by barking, growling and nipping at him through my kennel. Well he didn’t fear me, I could sense he had a very strong and confident personality. This meant I could relax and be a dog because I knew my handler had everything under control.

I really enjoy running around in the yard, rolling in the grass, being brushed out but my favorite thing has been going for a car ride! Man you talk about pure joy that was it!

I can be very loving and like to snuggle up to you once I’m comfortable with you. I’m so thankful for the staff here and this new volunteer buddy of mine who have helped me enjoy life while in a shelter but I am ready to find my forever person.

Here’s what I am looking for: I need a single guy with a strong, dominant and confident personality as that gives me the reassurance I need to relax and be a dog. I need a pack leader who lives alone with no other pets and someone who doesn't get many visitors. I need someone who is maybe a little lonely and needs a best friend as I have a lot of love and friendship to give.
