This is HARLEY, a young Pitbull mix who is unfortunatly at DCAC, surrenderred by his owner. At this time, this shelter has 41 pitbull and high pitbull mixes. Right now, these dogs make up 37% of our available dogs over every other breed in the shelter. Its no wonder that we get upset when people breed, give-away and refuse to fix their pitbulls. Many who get the breed have NO IDEA what they are really, truly about or what makes them thrive. They end up in shelters, only to be euthanized because no one picks them to adopt. This young man is one of the statistics above. He is just a baby who needs excersize, structure and a good leader. He is not neutered, and was brought in when someone had got him from a friend, and when they got home he reacted to their dog. We have no idea what introduction they gave him nor what experience they have with the breed. They stated when they took him anywhere on leash, he reacted to other dogs. What we see so far is a young puppy who is curious about other dogs and wants to play and a beautiful, young pit mix who is available for adoption or rescue. We have just begun to work with him but we have so many others to worry about. We take in approximately 4500 animals a year. Unfortunately we are a high kill shelter due to the amount of animals being brought to the shelter. We euthanize mostly due to space and temperament.
