Despite a rough start when FACE received Martha as a stray, she has been perfectly healthy for more than a year now! Because we thought the cat room environment was just too much for her to handle, she was moved upstairs to the business offices where she shares her time and space with people and one other office cat. She does well with the other office cat in her area, so she could potentially go to a home with another (cat-friendly) cat. She would prefer to live somewhere without dogs. Although healthy, she did test positive for FIV. FIV is an often misunderstood condition. It moves very slowly and gradually affects a cat’s immune system. Basically if a cat gets sick it would take their immune system a little longer than normal to fight it off. Transmission to other cats is difficult- only through very deep bite wounds or sexual activity which is rare in spayed or neutered domesticated cats. FIV cats can live long, healthy lives if cared for properly. Many live their entire lives without any symptoms at all. Owner’s of FIV+ cats should try to keep their immune systems strong by providing a high quality diet, staying up to date on vaccines and routine vet visits, and not delaying when a cat shows symptoms of illness.

Martha has a wonderful personality. She loves her office people and often visits them by jumping up on the desk to say hi and give them a kitty lick! She also is pretty funny – if she wants to be pet but people are not giving her enough attention, she will sprawl across the computer keyboard and give her people (gentle) nibbles to remind them she’s there!! When she’s not enjoying the office staff's company, she loves cubbies, beds with heating pads or cat houses where she can get some peace & quiet.

She also snores!!!! It is hilarious and adorable. Just loud enough that you can hear it if you’re in the same room as her. Martha loves to be a lapcat, can hold a conversation, is a great purrer and loves treats. She is a really wonderful companion, and is ready for a permanent loving home where she can thrive.

The animal world lost a true friend and an advocate and Cole Winnefeld's family is paying tribute to their son by covering the adoption fee for many of FACE's long-term feline residents.

In 2009 Cole was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma, and he fought through multiple rounds of treatment and therapies for over six years. He never achieved remission. Cole loved animals, especially cats and this idea came from Cole himself.

Earlier this year Cole learned of an abused cat in need of a good home that was in FACE's care (Jarbeller). He decided he had to step in and do something because he feared that she would be overlooked because of her abused past. He and his family decided they would pay her adoption fee to ensure she would be adopted into a good home. Cole and his Mom drove to FACE and paid the fee. Cole was sneaky..once the adoption fee was paid Cole asked to bring the cat home to keep. (He had even surprised his Mom by putting the cat carrier in the trunk before they left the house that day.) Needless to say, she is now a part of the Winnefeld family.

We've lost Cole, but his big heart and love for animals will live on.

Thanks for your interest in adopting a cat from FACE! Adult cats (over 1 year of age) are $25 to adopt. They are all spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, and microchipped! We have a wonderful free-roaming room where all of our adoptable cats have the freedom to explore and interact with the other cats which makes them well socialized and ready for homes. You can find an adoption application at http://facespayneuter.org/adoptions/cat-adoption-application/ or if you have specific questions you can email our Adoption Coordinator at Janetm@facespayneuter.org.
