Meet Buster

BUSTER: 4-5 year old neutered male black Lab mix, 55-60 lbs

Buster is a friendly, gentle, sweet 4 -5 year old black lab mix. This sweet boy was abandoned in the hills above San Jose, and was rescued by a retired couple who lived nearby. At the time, he was ~ 40 pounds, skinny, dirty, hungry, and obviously on his own. They fell in love with this sweet boy, but he managed to escape a couple of times, taking their 10 year old terrier mix with him. In such a remote area, there is a lot of wild life to feast on dogs, and they were worried about losing the terrier, so they reluctantly called Lab Rescue for help in finding Buster a new home. Buster is now safe in a foster home, where he settled in quickly and has already stolen his foster mom’s heart.

Buster loves his treats, and is very eager to please. He knows sit, lie down and stay, and is good as gold in the house, riding in the car, and walking on the leash. He is curious and upbeat, and a delight to take on walks. People stop to say hello, and he sits, wags his tail, and is a perfect gentleman. He has lovely silky soft fur, and the sweetest face. An affectionate dog, he just wants to be near his humans. He’s smart, and will lie down quietly on his bed when asked to.

He still needs to put on a bit more weight, but he has a very healthy appetite and enjoys his treats, so that should not be a problem. He takes treats gently, especially when reminded, and he is not food aggressive.

The ideal home for Buster would be a home where someone can be with him most of the time. Buster has spent too much of his young life abandoned and on his own; we want to find a family that has the time to spend with him, playing, running and having fun. Given his prior “escapes”, he will need supervised playtime in a secure, escape-proof, fenced yard with some room to run and play with his humans. Buster would do well in a home with humans who provide gentle but firm guidance.

He has not been tested with cats, but was around outdoor cats at the prior home, and did not chase them; he would look at them through the window and not bark or act out towards them in any way. He was around another dog at the previous home, and initially had some issues with the other dog, although eventually they became good buddies. We will take Buster to meet other dogs, but until we know how he will do with other dogs, we would recommend a home where Buster is the only dog.
