LOCATED IN FAIRLAWN, NEW JERSEY

MEET MAGGIE! -This beautiful 4 year old girl is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever/Poodle mix (Chesadoodle) and she was originally surrendered to DRC because her former owner became ill and was no longer able to care for her. Maggie was placed into a wonderful home 7 months ago but the busy neighborhood and comings and goings of teenagers, their friends, lawn service people etc. have left Maggie feeling stressed, over protective of her family and she has become more and more reactive towards strangers in this environment. The family has asked that we find Maggie a calmer more quiet home with less activity and visitors.

Maggie is a friendly, loving, loyal and well-mannered girl  who just happens to be a dog who needs "space." when it comes to meeting strangers and/or being exposed to new situations. She is a big girl at nearly 80 lbs. and she has a soft, mixed, wire-haired/ fur coat that is light-shedding and will require some regular grooming every 6-8 weeks.

Maggie's original foster mom described Maggie as "a gift. She is such a friendly easy-going dog in her own environment. Her tail is always wagging. She is well-mannered, loving, and is the perfect house guest. She loves to be close to her people and she is a very loyal and faithful companion. My heart just breaks for her because she lost the only home she has ever known. She has a look on her face that almost says "Thank you so much for taking me in. I promise I won't be too much trouble." and she really is no trouble at all. Maggie just wants to please and love and be loved."

" Maggie has an interesting mixed coat. It's soft and really curly all over her body except on her head. She does have the doodle beard and a bit of a mustache but her head is really more retriever-like than poodle. We were told that she is a light-shedder. But I am more apt to say that she is a dog that will blow her coat at certain times of the year and the rest of the time she is a light to moderate "shedder."  She is completely house-trained and knows all basic commands. She knows how to give you her paw, and will lay down when you ask. She rides beautifully in the car. She'll just lie down in the back and you don't hear a peep out of her."

"Maggie has two things she could use some work with. She will occasionally attempt to counter surf and she will chase bicycles and cyclists. It must be either a fascination with wheels or a fear of wheels. Not sure which at this point. She can be stubborn when she doesn't want to do something. In those instances I just have to chuckle at her. Her great personality overrides her minor behavioral "issues" and you really can't help but smile at Maggie when she acts up and tries to get one over on you. It shows that she is highly intelligent and engaged."

"Maggie has excellent recall but could use some leash practice. She is very strong...like an ox! And she can easily drag me down the street when she wants to. When in her own environment, Maggie does not like to share her space with most other dogs. She will resource guard her food and anything else she thinks belongs to her. She gets along great with some other dogs when outside of her environment. She loves her toys, belly rubs, snuggling on the couch and giving kisses. She isn't much of a barker. A nice bonus! At this point we have to say that Maggie will really need to be the only dog in the house"

Maggie will need a fenced in yard and an active dog-savvy adult family willing to work with her and possibly a professional trainer in regards to her"issues." What is most important for Maggie, and what will ensure her success in her new home, is her new family's complete understanding of her "issues", of dogs in general, and their fluency in "the language of dog." Maggie needs firm yet, patient gentle guidance and strong leadership. She needs to understand through positive reinforcement, that it is not her job to protect her people or her home. Most importantly Maggie needs to feel secure and not be put into uncomfortable situations where she will be set up for failure. All this girl wants, needs and so deserves, is to be someone's baby. She is really a very good girl with a gentle loving soul and has so much love to give to the right family."

Maggie is spayed, micro-chipped and UTD on all vaccines and preventatives. She will be a wonderful addition to the right family.
