Meet Gidget

Name: Gidget
Age: Young Adult
Breed: Australian Shepherd Mix
Gender: Female

Most people will spend a few moments looking at Gidget's photo and then simply move on to the next, as they have done, passing her over, time and time again for the last year (yes, Gidget has been with us for 1 year now). Not because she is a bad dog (sure she has a few quirks, but who doesn't?), but because she doesn't look like your average dog. And lots of times, people are afraid of things they dont understand. Gidget is a 1.5 year old Australian Shepherd mix girl who was given up when her family was expecting their third child, and they realized they didnt have the time to properly train her. Gidget is special in many ways. She has a fun and energetic personality. She loves being with her people, and loves cuddling up on the couch for a good movie. Gidget is what is called a "Double Merle." What this means is someone bred two merle colored dogs together (which is a BIG NO NO) and when the happens it often results in puppies being born with some kind of defect (usually deaf, blind, or both). Lucky for Gidget, she is neither deaf, nor blind. Gidget can hear just fine. She has what is called Micropthalmia (small eyes), which causes her to look a bit different. But Gidget has about 50-75% of her vision and gets around just as well as a dog with 100% vision. Gidget would do best in a home with no other dogs, or with another larger dog. While she does love to play with other dogs, she can be a bit bossy and it takes her a while to warm up to other dogs (so unfortunately not a good dog park candidate). She would do just fine in a home with another dog with someone who is dog savvy and knows how to handle a "Diva" like Gidget, and is willing to work through to kinks the first few weeks are likely to bring. She is house broken, crate trained and fostered with other dogs and cats (although she does try to play with the cats). She was raised with kids and does just fine. She is incredibly smart and eager to learn and would love a family to train her and show her all the great things life has to offer such a wonderful girl like herself. Gidget is a bit shy around new people, and takes a little more time to warm up to men, but given the proper amount of time and patience, she does wonderfully.
