Dusty was one of our early large bird rescues and we selfishly thought we would keep him.  As our rescued animal numbers have increased, the time available to spend with him has correspondingly decreased and companion birds require daily interaction.  So far, he has not talked, but does copy noises, such as a kissing sound and whistles.  He was vetted, wings clipped and nails trimmed.  We will be very selective on his new home due to the 50-70 year lifespan. 

Most recently, one of our newest volunteers has determined to socialize the many birds at the rescue center and has worked with Dusty.  He will continue training Dusty but as of this writing, Dusty will come out of his cage and perch on top, will take treats gently, loves to have is head and neck scratched, and will 'go home' back into his cage on command, but he will not step up (but we'll continue working on it).  He has a 'soft' bite; when you pick him up, he squawks and bites, but generally does not break the skin.   We think it is just a matter of time and developing confidence and he will be stepping up.  His adopter will need to be very patient.

 IndyCLAW Rescue, Inc stands for 'Creating Lifelong Animal Welfare'. It is not just our motto, it's also our mission statement. Our adoption process is face to face and involves an application, a home visit, a 'sleep over' trial period, and a reasonable rehoming fee to conclude the adoption process. We will not ship our pets or put them on an out of state transport. We are a not for profit group, though not yet 501c3, and do not receive funding from any sources other than our personal incomes, generous donations from private individulals and our fees. Generally speaking, each pet we adopt out has more vet expenses than the adoption fee covers. We have a vested interest in each of our adoptable pets and want to make sure that their future home can provide for their long term needs. There is also an adoption contract that does include a clause for the return of the pet to us, if the adoption fails or circumstances change making it so the pet has to move on to another home.  IndyCLAW does not sell its pets to breeders nor ship its pets for long distance adoptions.


Dusty's adoption fee is $200 and does not include the cage.

The Amazon is a loving and sociable parrot originating from South America.

The affectionate and loyal nature of the Amazon make this bird a wonderful pet for those experienced with companion parrots. Amazons are highly intelligent and require a devoted owner who is willing to provide significant and meaningful attention, as well as stimulus such as chewing toys to keep them happy and healthy.

Amazons are known for their exceptional vocal abilities, playfulness, and dexterity with their feet. They are very loyal, loving companions; having them is somewhat like having a two-year-old-human child in ability and temperament for 50-plus years.

However, some amazons are aggressive (usually during their mating time), and they all require a lot of attention when kept as pets. Parrots require more attention and care than domesticated pets such as dogs or cats, and are not for the inexperienced bird owner.

All parrots need a lot of stimulating activities to keep from being bored and terribly destructive to themselves and their surroundings. In particular, since Amazons are cavity nesters in the wild, their desire to chew wood is strong, and they need to be provided with destructible toys to satisfy this innate urge.
