Tonka came to MHRR in April 2010 from the second group of 14 Flemish Giants all from the same family. He was adopted later that year, but returned with a girlfriend Dolly in May 2011. He was adopted again, but was returned due to family circumstances in Nov 2012.
Tonka was born in July 2009, making him 3 1/2 years old. He is a BIG, beautiful bunny! He demands affection on occasion (will nip if you don't greet him!) but doesn't like being held at all. He will lay with you for a long time if you're massaging his head & ears!
Tonka first came to us as a youngster with a 'frozen hock' (back leg joint that wouldn't move) and developed splay leg (leg stuck out to the side instead of staying under his body). Tonka first came to us as a youngster with a 'frozen hock' (back leg joint that wouldn't move) and developed splay leg (leg stuck out to the side instead of staying under his body). The vet removed the leg in August 2011 to stop arthritis from developing in his hips and causing him pain for the rest of his life. He soon adjusted to his new low-entry tote-turned-litterbox, and now he can even jump back into his tubby cage on his own now. Even though he has a slight handicap (which doesn't slow him down much!), he still needs a large area to house him, his litterbox, food bowl, etc., and still be able to move since he is such a big guy. An exercise pen would be perfect, and is how he was housed before his surgery. He currently has a 2'x4' cage with a rug in it, as well as 5'x7' rug outside of the cage to run and lounge on. You could also use foam nursery mats. He is technically a free-range rabbit, but he doesn't leave the carpet or rug because of the slippery floors. He generally leaves most things alone that are on the rug, including a wicker chair and an office chair (that he loves to snuggle under), but he will play with paperwork if he is bored or hungry! He also uses the litterbox well, with the occasional stray dry poops outside of the box (but never urine). Tonka's only medical requirements at the moment are to clean his ear on the side where he is missing the leg (he will also show you when he wants it scratched!) once a week, and to check his underside on the missing-leg side as he sometimes gets a matt or poop around the tail since he can't clean it well. It's pretty easy to stay on top of. He is not on any pain medicine, though he may need it in the future.
Tonka is fostered in Baton Rouge, LA.
Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue asks a $50 adoption fee per rabbit, or $80 for a pair. We strongly recommend indoor homes for our adopted pets - they are part of the family and there are many perils of living outdoors, even in the safest of hutches. Rabbits are tattooed 'MHR' in the ear (while under anesthesia) and are spayed/neutered before they are adopted. Each adopted pet comes with an adoption certificate and a week's supply of their current diet. Adoption information and applications can be found at our website at http://www.magichappensrescue.com/adoptinfo.html. Want to adopt but can't? You can sponsor a rabbit, or help the bunnies in many other ways - see our website for all of our fundraisers.
