Meet Nikki and Teddy

Teddy and Nikki are two senior yorkies who were neglected and left outside in a crate for 4 days in the  hot humid sun and then two days of torrential thunder storms.  Speaking of Dogs Rescue took these two dogs into rescue and they have been in foster care recovering for the last 3-4 months.  They have been extensively vetted, including Nikki's eye surgery. We feel they are now ready for adoption.  Their kind, caring foster parents have written the following profiles to help any potential adopters understand their needs and personalities.  These dogs must be adopted together.  Might you have room in your heart for these two sweet angel dogs?

their medications per month (for both dogs) will be about 80.00 total

Teddy

Teddy is a 15 year old 10 pound Yorkie male who was crated outside with his sister by his previous owner.

Teddy has an enlarged heart that presses on his airways and makes him cough, much like asthma.  He is on daily medication for his heart and his cough but neither one completely addresses the cough.  Daily walks are essential for Teddy to make sure he sleeps well at night and they have helped his cough significantly.  He regularly walks around 2.5 km a day and would gladly walk farther if we let him.  Because of his cough Teddy needs a harness for his walks, not a collar.

Teddy is the house greeter.  He loves running to the door to see who is visiting.  He seems bolder than his sister but he is a little shier around people.  He has mild cataracts and does not seem to hear as well as he probably did when he was younger.  It is important that he see your hand, preferably at his side, not over him, before you pet him so he is not startled.  Teddy loves to cuddle but will ask permission (usually) before jumping up on the couch to join you.  Because he is larger than his sister, stairs and couches are no problem for him.  He loves to sit on or beside your lap and let you pet him.  This is heaven for him.  He will often rub against your feet when you sit down to ask for pets.

Teddy is usually pretty quiet but he will let you know if he wants out or if someone is at the door.  He is completely housebroken and is reluctant to use the pee pads during the night which is often necessary because the medication for his heart makes him thirsty.  He will use them once he realizes his people are not getting up to let him out.  Teddy hates being locked in a crate.  He just wants to be around his people.  Other than that, he is a very easy going dog.  He is not as likely to walk up and cuddle with his people as his sister but don’t think he doesn’t want to.  He just likes to wait and see if his people want him first.  He often wakes once at night to pee and may cough briefly but must be allowed to sleep near his family or he will bark and becomes quite stressed.

He is great with other dogs including large ones.  He is good with children although I would not recommend a home with young children due to his small size.  He has not noticed any cats in our daily walks so we cannot say if he would get along with them or not although I suspect with his calm and quiet nature, he would just keep to himself.  He must be adopted with his sister, Nikki, as they have been together since birth and are strongly bonded.

Nikki

Nikki is a 15 year old 6 pound Yorkie female who was crated outside with her brother by her previous owner.

She has recently had her left eye removed due to repeated ulcers and pain in that eye to relieve the pain she was often in.  She is getting around just fine with one eye and much prefers this to the pain and the cone she wore before.  Once her hair grows back in, it won’t even be noticeable.  She does require daily eye drops in her good eye to preserve the sight she has remaining.  She has a mild cataract in her other eye and so she prefers to go for walks during the day or on well-lit streets she is familiar with if the sun is going down.  Otherwise, she tends to misjudge the heights of curbs and sidewalk cracks and could injure herself.  She loves her walks and can keep up with her larger terrier companions and her brother in-between sniffs along the way.  Nikki will cough if she wears a collar which is common in such small breeds.  The vet said she should never wear one.  She needs a harness for her walks.

She is spunky little girl who is shy around men when she meets them but once she is allowed to get to know you, she is cuddly and cute.  She is definitely her foster dad’s little sweetheart.  She will have you wrapped around her little paw in no time.  This smart little girl has taught herself to climb stairs although she is still a little nervous going down, especially if the light is not bright enough.

She is a very quiet dog.  She never barks at the door or people walking by.  Re Housetraining: provided her people remember to take her out after every nap and meal and periodically in between, she is pretty good.  She will not ask to go out though and when pressed, will find another place to go.  She is afraid of being locked in her crate alone as well as rain, baths and especially thunder.  Some loud noises frighten her as well.  She prefers to be close to her people where she can get all the love and attention she deserves and craves.  She is definitely a lap dog.

She is great with other dogs including large ones.  She is good with children although I would not recommend a home with young children due to her tiny size.  She has not noticed any cats in our daily walks so we cannot say if she would get along with them or not although I suspect with her calm and quiet nature, she would just keep to herself.  She must be adopted with her brother, Teddy, as they have been together since birth and are strongly bonded.
