Meet Speedy EBT

Speedy is in his new home in Michigan!    We have other box turtles available, though; some are slightly special needs.  Please read the full description before requesting an application for a box turtle.

Speedy is a sub-adult three-toed box turtle that was in the Baltimore area, although shipping was possible if the adopter paidfor shipping.  He was sold by a breeder that gave very bad advice, so Speedy had a rough early start and was kept too dry and fed the wrong foods at first, which caused some shell, beak, and foot deformities early in life. He has a hard time righting himself if he falls on his back, so he needs to be indoors in the winter.  He needs a very humid substrate, such as aged or shredded hardwood bark mulch and leaf litter. He would like a "turtle table" of at least eight square feet.  We can send you an aritcle that shows you how to make one yourself.  Other than the fact that he shouldn't hibernate and his shell looks kind of funny, Speedy really isn't all that special needs now.

To learn more about box turtles, visit http://www.boxturtlesite.org/ or pick up a copy of Tess Cook's Box Turtles book in pet stores, and to find instructions for a simple backyard box turtle enclosure, visit http://www.billsboxturtles.com

Speedy is currently eating the diet recommended here:

To request an application and a picture of a simple temporary indoor enclosure, if needed, e-mail matts_adoptions@ hotmail.com - make sure to indicate your CITY and STATE. (Remove the space after the @ symbol before sending the e-mail.)

We cannot place EBTs in GA, TN, PA, NY, or points north of PA and NY on the eastern shore. Residents of NJ, IN, and OH require a permit for EBTs. Maryland residents may require a permit if they already have one eastern box turtle. Check www.matts.petfinder.com for more information on owning a turtle.

Like turtles but can't have one? Want to help? MATTS accepts tax-deductable donations at MATTS, P.O. Box 22321, Baltimore, MD 21203. Rescue is funded by donations only, and we find homes for over 100 animals a year.
