My name is Hershey. My story has a sad beginning, but now that I’ve been rescued I’m getting my second chance to have a great life, and things are looking up for me!

I was put in a plastic garbage bag and thrown out of a moving vehicle, and left for dead. Luckily, a Good Samaritan saw me being thrown from the car and contacted the police. The police took me to the local animal shelter for safety, and they are still working to locate the person who committed this horrific act of cruelty. The Humane Society has offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to their conviction.

Mutts Matter was contacted by the PG County shelter and asked to take me in because they have a track record of successfully rehabilitating abused dogs like me. I am safe now, and on the physical and emotional mend.

I’m only 8 months old and weight about 28lbs, which is really underweight for me, but Mutts Matter has been working to help me pack on some pounds. I am very sweet but shy, and learning to trust people again.  I'm hesitant and still a little fearful of change or new people, but I’m getting more confident and stronger every day.

I'm being fostered in a home with another dog, and Mutts Matter thinks I would do best living in a family that also has a well-balanced dog who can help me adjust, be my companion, and build my confidence. What I need most is a patient, loving family who will give me some time to settle in, and will make me a special part of their lives.

Update: Hershey is recovering, eating well, and has already gained 4 pounds in a week. He’s been thoroughly vetted and tended to, and is transitioning into his foster home. He will continue to rehabilitate there and get the chance to acclimate to home life.

Hershey's tendons on his paws are deformed from being kept in too small of a cage for too long. He also has urine burns on his feet from not being let out and having to stand in his own urine. The good news is he has been seen by an orthopedic surgeon who believes that he is young enough that these things can correct with time, proper nutrition, and exercise. They will re-examine him in a few weeks to see how he’s progressing.

Hershey’s story is getting a lot of attention, but the reality is that there are many, many cases of this kind of dog abuse and neglect, especially surrounding pit bull-type pups.
