Meet Patty Pan

Patty Pan is a 4 year old, nine pound Yorkie-Dachshund mix who was almost squashed by a car. Instead, it was a violent collision that left her with her pelvis and right femur (thigh bone) broken.  Patty needed orthopedic surgery to be able to walk again.  Because she had two serious fractures, her healing process took a long time. We are thrilled to report that both fractures are healed and Patty Pan is walking well on all four legs now.

Dr. Marguriet, at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic gets a big Woof! from Patty Pan for saving her leg and giving her a chance for a normal lifestyle. As you can imagine, the pain she has suffered was great, but her spirits are very positive.

Her history to date–

Update 7/15/12: Patty Pan, AKA Susie Q had surgery to pin her leg on the 11th.  She’s all bandaged up and can hobble around some.  Her spirits aren’t dampened one bit, though.  She is quite the trooper and doesn’t understand why she has to be confined to her cage…  The bandage will be changed on the 18th, and her next check up will be on the 25th, when another x-ray will be taken to check for bone alignment and healing.

Update 7/31/12:  Patty Pan had her 3 week check up yesterday with mixed results. On the good news side, the x-rays show that her leg fracture is healing in nicely. The bad news is that her pelvic fractures are not. We suspect that because she puts all her weight on her left rear leg, it really pushes her pelvis out of alignment whenever she stands up or walks. She will return for a recheck around September 1st. At that time she will undergo surgery to remove the pin from her leg and she’ll have another x-ray to see how her pelvis is healing. If it doesn’t heal, she will need orthopedic surgery to attach plates that will hold her pelvis together. We’ve drastically reduced Patty Pan’s pen size, and hope that will force her to be less active than before and allow her pelvic fractures to heal.

Update 8/30/12:  Patty Pan returned to Paces Ferry Veterinary Hospital for surgery yesterday, but her x-rays showed that her leg fracture hasn’t  healed enough.  Dr. Marguriet wants to wait another two weeks to see if the bone will heal.  If not, Patty Pan will lose her leg.

We have had some serious talks with Patty Pan about the necessity for her to stay in her small crate and not move around.  She thinks we are being very mean to her, and protests her treatment.  This is “Tough Love”, though, so we must turn a deaf ear to her, for her sake.

Update 9/12/12:  With strict cage rest Patty Pan’s leg healed very well.  She will keep her leg.  She had her pin taken out today and has completed half the battle.  Patty Pan is getting closer to finding her forever home.
