Meet Ryder - ADOPTED

Ryder is a 4-year-old purebred classic English style Yellow Labrador Retriever from the country of Taiwan; he currently weighs 60 pounds.

Ryder was a family pet but never being treated as a family member; in order to keep him quiet, Ryder was de-barked by his owner in an early young age. He had a home, but during daytime while his owners out for work he lived on streets as a stray; he returned home at night before his owners went to bed. The neighbors sometimes would feed Ryder some left over table food, but most of time Ryder starved and could not find any food for himself. One day his owners decided that it was too much to take care of him, and surrendered him at a high killed government-run animal shelter in Taiwan.

Ryder was rescued the day before being put down by a lady who is a Labrador lover. After receiving several medical examinations including CBC blood work, except underweight Ryder luckily did not have any major disease. He is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations including rabies shot, heartworm negative and on preventative treatment, and is micro chipped. He has passed a DNA test to prove he is healthy for adoption, and he also had his teeth cleaned in early May.

Ryder has a mellow temperament that makes him to get along well with dogs of all sizes and is liked by people; but he is more people-oriented dog that prefers to be with people than with dogs. He likes dogs that are as mellow as him better. He is also fine with cats; he is not interested in cats and totally ignores them when they are around.

Ryder is passionate to the people whom he knows. He is friendly and not shy nor timid with strangers; he would approach and greet the people he first meets with a wagging tail. Ryder loves to eat but is neither food nor toy aggressive or possessive towards people. As a big male dog, Ryder is very gentle to the children. He is not upset with children who pull his ears, hold his nose, climb on his body or take food or toys out of his mouth. And we believe that Ryder probably does not mind being dressed up either.

Ryder is a calm, loving and laid-back dog who likes to stay at people side. He does not show a lot interest in doing heavy activities or playing or running with other dogs, so walking should be enough exercise for him every day. He will be good for low-moderate active family with or without children, and he will also fit in well with one-dog family.

Ryder is housebroken, fine in car rides, and walks very well on the leash. He had X-ray checked on his hips and joints that shows he has mild hip dysplasia; however, Ryder walks normally and does not show any signs of arthritis. He has been given daily glucosamine supplements since rescued to keep hip dysplasia from progressing. We recommend that Ryder should not be a candidate to take for jogging or running, he should also avoid fetching or playing Frisbee. Keeping Ryder in low weight is the best for him to avoid putting strain on his joints.

Ryder is currently living with a foster family in Taiwan and will be scheduled to be in the United States once we find a loving home for him. He will be staying with our foster family in North Wilmington, Delaware after his arrival. If you are seriously thinking of giving Ryder a loving permanent home, please email us for an adoption application, but please do not contact us if you are not sure if it is a right time for you and your family to welcome Ryder into your life at this point; we have only one volunteer who has been working tirelessly on our adoption. And sorry we do not accept drop-by visits. Before visiting our dog, the potential family needs to fill out the application and gets approved.
