Do you have a lap in need of a little dog?

Suzy Q was surrendered to APB by her owner of six years due to his poor health and inability to care for her any longer. She was an only dog in her previous setting so coming into a foster home with many other dogs and new people was a bit scary and overwhelming for her at first. The great news is that over the course of her foster time and with patience given for her to learn trust, Suzy has become much less timid both with the resident foster dog siblings, (and new ones when they come in), and with unfamiliar people. Suzy is house trained when kept on a schedule and will go potty when taken out or let out, although she can be a bit of a stinker to get outside when it’s cold, (nobody wants to go out when it’s cold right?). Putting a warm sweater or coat on her would help as she does get cold easily. She has also used a piddle pad in foster on occasion and could easily be trained to continue with that on those nasty weather days. Suzy is crate trained, preferring to sleep buried under blankets on a soft bed in her crate when not with her person. Suzy actually plays fetch with a favorite toy now and attempts to play with the other dogs, (which is comical to watch because she is not really sure how to dog play). She came to us a little protective of her human lap by barking when other dogs approached but that has diminished tremendously in foster. She snuggles with the gentler members of the foster pack, shares laps and kisses with them and only occasionally “sasses” the more rambunctious members of the group. Still her favorite place to be is anywhere her human is. Suzy walks well on a leash and loves car rides. She is a wonderful snuggler, loves to be gently petted and will encourage you to keep petting her if you stop. When she is really comfortable…she snores!! Suzy does have keen hearing with those large ears so she will let you know if something is amiss but she is not yappy. She does this adorable little head tilt when she is listening to you intently.

Suzy is approximately 7 years old, (middle age for a Chihuahua), heartworm negative, UTD on all her shots, 7.5 lbs and spayed. She does have luxating patellas in both knees, (common in Chihuahua’s), however it does not require surgery. In fact, her knees have improved greatly with the exercise/better nutrition she is getting in foster and she keeps up with the rest of the pack in her large backyard. Because of Suzy’s delicate frame and shy disposition, she will not be recommended for placement in a home with children below the age of 12. This little girl is ideal for the retired couple or single person wanting a gentle soul to hang out or travel with. Suzy would do well as a single dog in the home or with another small lapdog of similar size and gentle disposition. She has not been tested with cats but I would expect her to ignore them if they ignore her. If you are looking for a little lap warmer with a gentle personality….. please check out Suzy Q.
