Meet Easter "Lily"

Meet our "Easter" Lily. Lily is a 13 week old 2 1/2 lb female Yorkie who was surrended to Yorkies Inc due to her having issues with her left eye. Her left eye is smaller than her right eye and she also has dry eye in the left eye. Dry eye is a condition where the glands in the eye do not produce any or enough liquid (tears) to be able to properly keep the eye lubricated. This can cause the cornea to become very dry and irriated. If left untreated it can causes ulcers on the eye and blindnes, but with proper daily care the eye is usually fine. Lily will be going to the eye specialist in the next week in order to determine the severity of the dry eye, how the eyes are overall functioning and if there is anything else wrong with the left eye due to its smaller size. In the meantime she is getting two different medications 6-8 times a day to keep the eye the moist and clean.

4-12 Lily went to the ophthalmologist for further evaluation of her left eye. Lily has been diagnosed with congenital dry eye and micro ophthalmic in her left eye. It does appear that she can see out of her left eye but they are not sure how well. The plan is for Lily to remain on artificial tears at least 6-8 times a day with warm compresses twice a day to keep the eye clean. Lily's new home will have to be diligent with the eye drops as if her eye is not kept moist and clean severe and permanent damage will be done to the eye. Dry eye can be a painful and discomforting condition if it is not take properly care of. There was discussion of removing the eye, but because she does not appear to be in any pain or discomfort and can see out of the eye, we are not currently considering that option. However, if in the future the eye causes Lily any pain or discomfort we will re-visit this option. Because Lily has congenital dry eye and was born with tear ducts that were not fully developed in her left eye she will need to remain on artificial tears for the rest of her life.

5/12 Lily is now about 20 weeks old and weighs 3.6 lbs. She continues to do
well. Her eye looks great as long as you keep up with the daily artificial tears
(about 5-6 times a day) and warm compresses (2 times a day, once when she first wakes up and once before bed) Some days her eye is a little goopy requiring a few more warm compresses but usually twice a day is enough. She is great when it comes to allowing you to clean her eye and put her drops in. She continues to be a very active, loving , playful puppy and would love a small playmate to play with. Lily's eye medications are not that expensive at all. One is just the regular artifical tears that you can buy at any store and the second is an
articial tear lubricant made especially for dogs that you can either purchase
from your vet or online. The cost of a large tube is less than $15.00 and will
last more than a month.
