My Story: Imagine living a decade with your family. The only people you know. Now imagine one day that family drops you and your two babies off at the local shelter. This is what happened to Dixie, when at 10 years old her family brought her to Martin County Humane Society in Southern MN. Dixie's two puppies were adopted out quickly but due to her age, euthanasia was looming in the horizon. One of the shelter Directors brought her into their home via foster care because the staff fell in love and could not let her face that ending. Dixie was soon brought up to the Twin Cities for foster care through Pet Haven, so she could get the medical attention she needed for a few issues, and to give her a better chance at getting adopted. Since then, she has gotten her several tumors removed, UTI cleared up, she got spayed, some dental work done, and she is losing weight via regular exercise.... so she is ready for her last & forever family to live out her golden years with! The surrendering family noted in her paperwork that she is a "husky mix" but we believe she is predominantly border collie with a little husky, golden retriever and possibly some spaniel mixed into the bunch.

Hobbies: Dixie is very low key. She loves sunbathing outside, or just laying next to you in the house. She loves dog beds and also loves being brushed. She enjoys a walk- even moreso now that her mobility is improving!

Commands/Tricks: Sit, Lay Down, Shake, and "Up" (to get into the car). She also walks PERFECTLY on a leash; except that every once in a while she will randomly decide to "herd" you.

Crate / Potty Trained:Yes to both! She is completely potty trained (even when she had a UTI she did not potty in the house!) and loves her crate. She sleeps on her foster brother's dog bed at night (note: she is the only dog he has ever just given his dog bed to...even dogs fall in love with Dixie!) and she is crated while her foster mom works, for 8 hours during the day. She has also been tested outside of the crate for shorts amount of time while her foster mom is gone and she does great- Dixie just lays on her foster brother's king sized orthopedic dog bed the whole time!

Activity Level: Low- Dixie is the perfect dog for a quiet family who is looking for a low-maintenance gal.

Fun things I do: Dixie acts very mellow, but underneath that calm exterior she is VERY smart and persistent (she didn't like her e-collar after the tumor removal surgery...she outsmarted her foster mom a few times in getting it off)!

Socialization/who I currently live with: In ger original home Dixie lived with an adult couple and their three children (ages 5-17). No issues between her and the family members were reported upon surrendering her to MCHS. In her new foster home Dixie lives with an adult female and a 7 year old, calm male Australian Shepherd.

My Ideal Family: Dixie would love to go to a family who will provide her with lots of attention, a daily walk (to keep her at a healthy weight!), and she prefers a home without other animals or that has other low-key animals. A calm household would be best for this gal!

Due to recent surgery, Dixie will not be attending Pet Haven's 3/31/12 dog adoption event. Her adoption fee is $200 (cash or check only) and includes spay/neuter, heartworm check, current vaccinations, and microchip and registration.
Due to post-adoption services provided, it is Pet Haven's policy to only place dogs into homes within a 60-mile radius of the Twin Cities area.
