Update 2013:  Junior was adopted to an outdoor backyard pen in Maryland!

Please read the entire description before contacting MATTS.

Junior is a sub-adult eastern box turtle that was brought to animal control following an appartment eviction. He can go into a predator-proof backyard enclosure in late May or early June and stay there year round or go back inside next winter. A permanent indoor enclosure (if used every winter) should have at least 8 square feet of space. An outdoor enclosure should have lots of room for exploring and digging and soaking in a water pan or shallow pond designed just for box turtles. Junior would do best by himself, but if he's kept with other box turtles, it should be in a very large pen with lots of hide spots and visual barriers. Males tend to fight other males and harrass lone females, so this is something to keep in mind if you already have a box turtle.

Junior is currently eating the diet recommended here:

To request an application and a picture of a simple temporary indoor enclosure, if needed, e-mail matts_adoptions@hotmail.com - make sure to indicate your CITY and STATE. There is a $30 adoption fee for Junior.

We cannot place EBTs in GA, TN, PA, NY, or points north of PA and NY on the eastern shore. Residents of NJ, IN, and OH require a permit for EBTs. Maryland residents may require a permit if they already own one eastern box turtle. Check www.matts.petfinder.com for more information on owning a turtle.

Like turtles but can't have one? Want to help? MATTS accepts tax-deductable donations at MATTS, P.O. Box 22321, Baltimore, MD 21203. Rescue is funded by donations only, and we find homes for over 100 animals a year.
