My Story:

Hey, I'm Wheels! I'm a 4 year old Labrador/Chesapeake Bay Retriever mix that is waiting to meet you at the shelter. I'm energetic and playful and will need my new friend to be firm with me and tell me no from time to time. I get really excited at times and burning off my extra energy will help me immensely. I'm more than friendly, wanting your undivided attention all of the time! I walk pretty well on a leash too, which is always good news! I seem to be a smart boy, so if you have the time to play ball or frisbee with me, I'll probably catch on and want to play right back. What I need in life is to have a friend that cares about me and is willing to do what it takes to have a special dog. The start to that is there with me, I just need someone to continue and take my training a little further. If the person to do that is you, fill out an application today! That can be done online or at the shelter.

UPDATE: Wheels has now been listed as a Special Needs dog because he recently had a seizure. We have been unable to find the cause which is both good and bad. His lab results were normal and we are unaware of what could have triggered the seizure. He is taking daily medication and is doing well. Wheels is still an active and friendly boy! The episode has not affected him adversely in any way. It did cause us to list him as not being good with small children, only because if he would happen to have another seizure, he will become unaware of his surroundings. We don't want any children to get knocked down or nipped because he doesn't know what is happening. Please don't let this medical issue discourage you from adopting Wheels! There is a strong probability that he has many years left in life and will always be a normal dog. The seizure could be one of those medical mysteries that will never be explained. In the meantime, we will continue to monitor him and any information we have will be passed on to the adopting family. Wheels is a great dog! A home of his own may be just what he needs to live life to the fullest.

UPDATE 2: Wheels has been here since September of 2011. He has had lots of interest but ultimately the seizure issues has caused those people to back away. Wheels is on daily medication that is said to be affordable and helps control his seizures. He currently has about one seizure a month and our veternarian says that is normal. Other than that major issue, Wheels is a great dog. Good with people and older kids, he will be a fantastic dog for the right family. He also would be a rescue that you can be very proud to say you helped. Apply to adopt Wheels and he'll be happy to bust out of the shelter with you!

UPDATE 3: Seriously, Wheels is a fantastic dog! Come down to the shelter and see for yourself. He is now our longest dog resident, and as much as we all love him here at the shelter, we really want him to find a loving family soon!
