Meet Zippy - URGENT!!

UPDATE 02-04-12: A kind person has donated $20 towards Zippy's adoption fee, so his new adoption fee is $105. Thank you so much to this kind person for helping out our handsome Zippy!

UPDATE 11-06-11: Well, our sweet boy Zippy is already thinking about Christmas! He was a perfect angel for his recent Christmas pictures, and he sure looks adorable in his holiday attire! It might seem a little early, but he thought he better start asking Santa Claus now for the only thing he wants for Christmas....a new best friend or new family to call his very own. Zippy doesn't need a pile of presents under the tree, or endless Christmas parties to attend, or the stress that many people take on over the holidays, he simply needs LOVE! What a wonderful concept....Zippy needs what the true meaning of Christmas is all about! Every night before he goes to sleep Zippy thinks about how lonely he has been for the past several months and how nice it would be to be curled up next to someone special instead of spending another night, alone, in his concrete kennel. We need your help in bringing Christmas to Zippy! Please help make his wish come true and help us find Zippy the perfect new home for the holidays!

UPDATE 10-04-11: Zippy attended our annual fundraiser "Strut Your Mutt" on Sunday, October 2, and he had the time of his life! It was held at the City Marina and it was a great day for Zippy. A volunteer who loves Zippy very much walked him instead of one of her own dogs and we have never seen a happier Zippy! He was great with all of the other dogs, loved the kids, loved the adults and loved being there the entire afternoon. We are all so proud of Zippy! We've added some pictures from the event and you can see that Zippy has lost quite a bit of weight (30 pounds to be exact) and his fur is thinner than when he came into the shelter. This sweet boy needs OUT of the shelter and into a home where he can de-stress and get some real TLC. Please come out and meet Zippy and see if you can provide him with the care and love that he needs. We loved seeing such a happy Zippy on Sunday, won't someone please give Zippy a reason to be happy everyday?

UPDATE 09-01-11: Zippy really needs a new best friend very soon!! The shelter is no place for Zippy, especially because of his skin issues. The stress of shelter life is beginning to show on our sweet Zippy, his coat seems to be getting thinner and he really needs to be in a home where his new owner can monitor him closely and get his skin and coat healthy again. Won't someone please give this great dog a chance to be happy again? He really misses being part of a family and really needs some TLC!!

UPDATE 07-10-11: Zippy has become a shelter favorite, because he is such a super nice dog. He has lots of energy and loves to go for walks and needs to have plenty of exercise. We have also learned that Zippy has a skin condition called "follicular dysplasia" which is more commonly known as color dilution alopecia. This simply means that Zippy's coat will most likely always be thin, dull and brittle although an excellent, premium dog food and omega 3 supplements may help his coat, and will certainly help his overall health. He may also have an occasional skin infection due to this condition, but the better his new owner takes care of him, the healthier and happier he will be. This skin condition is most prevalent in blue dogs of any breed, is not contagious, and is due to humans interfering with breeding dogs to produce a certain color (blue) which is not natural. Zippy is a happy dog, and one of his favorite tricks is to lay on his back and "juggle" a basketball! He is a great dog and worth every extra bit of effort that it may take to keep him healthy!

ORIGINAL BIO:

Zippy is a three year old charcoal colored lab mix. He arrived at the shelter in early June. His owner is elderly and just could not take care of Zippy anymore. Needless to say is was a very sad day for Zippy and his owner, because his owner loves Zippy very, very much. Zippy is a SUPER nice dog, loves to give kisses, is good on a leash and is just an all around nice, nice dog. He is around 3 years old and weighs around 88 pounds. We are considering him "special needs" because he has food allergies and will need to be fed a special food (grain free), which keeps him healthy and happy. But we are more than confident that will not be a burden for his new owner, because they will be rewarded with the love and loyalty of a very, very special dog!

If you would like to meet one of our pets, please visit us during adoption hours: Wednesday from noon until 6:00; Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from noon until 4:00.

If you would like more information on a pet, please call us at 231-723-7387 during the adoption hours listed above. We can also provide a limited amount of information by e-mail.

The adoption fee for a neutered MALE dog or puppy is $125. The adoption fee for a spayed FEMALE dog or puppy is $150.

The adoption fee for a puppy or dog that is NOT spayed or neutered is $75, plus a refundable $50 spay/neuter deposit (refunded upon proof from your vet that your new pet has been spayed or neutered in accordance with the spay/neuter contract).
